Hi All! I am new to this hobby but have dived into it with great enthusiasm! First I would like to thank you all for the information Ive found on these forums! Second I am close to finishing up My fallschirmjager impression I have based it on the Monte Cassino battles and have a few questions to ask... What was the pattern of the jumpsmocks worn by these troops? was it splinter, green or Tan and water? Was the Tan and water mostly a later pattern used in France? Would the jump boots in this time frame be front lace ups? Was a paratroop issued an MP-40 likely to have a K98 bayonet on his equipment belt? Or would this most likely have been taken from a fallen Comrade? Was blue felt on a canteen used in the very early years of the Luftwaffe? or is this fantasy? I have based much of my kit on the pictures from this website: www.pbase.com/e5sargemac/fallschirmjager_monte_cassino_italy_1944Is this figure a good representation of a Fallschirmjager in Monte Cassino? Thanks for your help, it will greatly help me finish my Kit! Gerry

Great to hear of another FJ! I'll try to answer some of your questions.
Q:What was the pattern of the jumpsmocks worn by these troops? was it splinter, green or Tan and water? A: I'd say it would be Splinter B, I'm not sure if it would be step in or button up, I think either would be correct. Q:Was the Tan and water mostly a later pattern used in France? A: T/W is a late war pattern, it was issued in Italy, I know for sure, not sure about France. Personally I don't like T/W, Splinter look more FJish to me. Q:Would the jump boots in this time frame be front lace ups? A: Yes, side lace ups were early war. There are repros or you could wear British jump boots. The British copied the German design. I wear jungle boots because thats all I could afford at the time. Q:Was a paratroop issued an MP-40 likely to have a K98 bayonet on his equipment belt? Or would this most likely have been taken from a fallen Comrade? A: He would have a fighting knife, You wouldn't be issued a Kar98 bayonet if you had an MP-40. You saw the figure with the bayonet with the FG42. The FG42 had a spike bayonet. Q:Was blue felt on a canteen used in the very early years of the Luftwaffe? or is this fantasy? A: I'm not sure about this one, they had blue bread bags, it could happen. I hope this answers all your questions

I would say that is a fairly good representation of a Fally from that period. Many Vet. FJ still retained the plain green smocks, even after splinter was issued. As far as I know Tan & Water was a late war issue smock. Also notice in that figure he is using his gasmask bag as a grenade carrier. The bags can be found at Landser Outfitters and run about 60 bucks as I recall. You could safely use Tropical pants and jacket with this era in mind. Fj's had a fighting knife and a gravity knife or one or the other. Probally not a k98 bayonet if they were never issued the K98 to begin with.

But if you were an NCO with an MP40 you wouldn't have a Kar98 bayonet.

Zak is correct the 98 was the standard weapon. I don't see an officer with an MP40 having one but he may, and I wouldn't exclude it from your uniform. I was basing my answer on the question asked. I am guessing Gerry is intending to do an officer or NCO impression with an MP40. An NCO or Field officer was probally a lower rank at one time and moved up in rank. He may keep the bayonet he was issued as a private.

I don't think anyone will critisize you for having a bayonet if you carry an MP40. It was handy to have a bayonet for a number of reasons, protection in hand to hand combat, utility use in the field etc. So carry one. It's not like you are asking to wear a Dot 44 Fallschirmjager helmet cover. ;D

I am finished with my Fallschirmjager Impression with the arrival of a Luftwaffe breadbag en route from Captain Zak's supply depot! Im pretty Excited to try it out. There is an old Military fort (fort Totten) Overlooking Hells Gate and the east river just down the road from my house it Definately has that Monte Cassino/european look & feel, this is where I will photograph my Impression!
