They were one of the few Italian small arms that were universally well liked. The German Army especially liked them and adopted them widely. FJ troops had far more access to them and greater flexibility and freedom to field what they liked than other units. The weapon of course would never have been in widespread use but far far moreso within the FJ units.

To this day, AFAIK, even modern Fallschirmjäger troops get a lot of private purchase leeway when it comes to gear and accessories.

From what I have seen in photos, the 38A was most commonly used by the FJ and police troops in Italy. Both had the most access to captured weapons and gear. As far as the Italians themselves go, they are most commonly seen with more elite units such as paratroops, and marines. Low production meant that they were not too common in the standard Italian army. They were also more common in the "blackshirt" divisions, but mostly because of political connections.
