I was thinking about what paints have given people the best results in trying to simulate a parkerized finish. What has worked for you?
Also, has anyone ever tried the "chalkboard" paint available at most home improvement stores for this? I imagine it might look quite a bit like parkerizing.

BTW, I did try the "chalkboard" paint, and while it's a little too black compared to real Parkerizing, it's actually almost identical to-- and arguably slightly better than-- the finishes you see on guns like the CYMA M14.
Not quite as awesome as the results in the thread above, but for someone looking for a cheap and easy solution for lower-end projects it could be very useful. (I'm thinking the M1 Carbine springers-- I know in wartime production some later ones were parked w/blued bolts/small parts-- could look realy good there.)

I find the automotive primer grey works quite well and is readily available and easy to use. It initially goes on way too dark but drys down to a good shade and acceptable finish. Carbines were often blued for wartime use (especially early issued guns)but also parkerized later during the war. Lots of manufacturers (even singer sewing machine company) so a wide variety of finishes.

When using spray paints it's always worthwhile to turn the can upside down and squirt a time or two till it shoots clear. This seems wasteful but it keeps your nozzle and tube clear of paint which often hardens and Gunks up. Sometimes trying another fresh nozzle will get your can back up and working but I suspect this special paint would be particularly susceptible to plugging things up.
I saw a replica painted with the light parkerized finish and it looked great! Next project that calls for it and I wouldn't hesitate to give it a go.

The link no longer works. But I did find the text in the internet archives. Just the text so it looses a little sizzle, I recall the pictures really sold the techniques. Still, it's good info. airsoft gun refinishing guide
