Nice tip. Thanks! The swiss canteens are another good solution. Just need a cup.

Though this is a great tip I would discourage against it. I'd rather see no canteen than everyone running around with East German "conversions". The Swiss canteens are a better substitute. If you need help converting yours drop me a PM.
Quickly, if you want to "convert" your Swiss canteen you'll need to but a repro cup and strap assembly, a small scrap of thin black leather and a needle with some waxed linen thread. You can use the existing Swiss cover but will need to add a few details to it.
Step 1. - remove the leather strap holding the cup on and Dremel off the "loop" on the canteen that the leather strap is connected to.
Step 2. - Sew the black leather strap retainers onto both sides of the Swiss canteen cover. At the bottom seam, add the "screw post" by sewing a leather border around it.
Step 3. - Assemble the canteen and add the metal cup (bakelite cups won't fit) and you're done. I will post some pics of this as I am doing a few of these canteens now.
I will be offering them up for sale for those interested.
