Americas most decorated soldier of WW2 came home a hero and went on to be a Hollywood star playing himself in his autiobiography TO HELL AND BACK and a number of B westerns. He was the son of a TEXAS Sharecropper and too small to join the Marines or Army paratroopers. His exploits were beyond incredible and some say Captain America was based on him.
He died in a plane crash and I remember hearing about it when it happened and my disbelief. He was haunted with survivors guilt, insomnia and classic symptoms of what today we call PTSD. Read more about him if you don't know his story.

He did a lot of work to bring people's attention to what we now call PTSD. They named a VA hospital after him.
