Got it at a Thrift shop for under $15.00. It appears brand new and a nice large size. What could\ should be done to more closely simulate a German WW2 great coat besides buttons? To my untrained eye it looks pretty close?

New buttons and shoulder boards should do the trick. The only main difference is going to be the pocket flaps which are straight rather than on an angle. With field gear it is not very noticeable unless one knows what they are looking for.

Awesome! That was what I was hoping to hear. Obviously from looking at pictures the dark dark green collars were present early in the war but that seemed to be less and less the case as the wat progressed. Were the epaulets plain or finished like the tunics in terms of insignia? Was this perhaps a sometimes yes while sometimes no kind of thing?
Thrilled to have happened upon this. There was a size 10 pair of German made jack boots as well so my German costumes got a nice boost today.

The green collar was only an early war thing. Even at that they were not as common as the gray ones. The coat had the same loop and button attachment as the tunic for shoulder boards so that the shoulder boards from the tunic could be attached to it. While collar insignia was, in theory, supposed to be used, one would be hard pressed to actually find examples outside ceremonial guards.

There are belt loops built into this coat. Were they present on German great coats as well? Would enlisted or officer rank insignia ever be present on a great coat? It seems from photos that were usually not? Incidentally the "Green" collars on tunics and pre war greatcoats (even in color photos) sure look black to me? Obviously a very very dark green.

The green collar was the same color as the m36 tunic and were made to go together. If by belt loops you mean the kind that are found on pants, then those should be removed, mine has none. Occasionally, one would see insignia such as SS sleeve eagles, cuff titles, and possibly rank insignia on the sleeves. But in general, such things would have been added by the troops (except for the SS sleeve eagles) and were not common enough to be worth replicating. It was probably as common as extra insignia on dot44 tunics. The most indication as to the soldier's rank would be found on the shoulder boards.

No, sleeve rank insignia on greatcoats was relatively common. I'd say that that would be perfectly acceptable

So helpful guys. Best to leave it plain after redoing the buttons and removing the two waist belt loops situated above both hips. The sleeves are doubled out with extended cuffs much like long Jean pant legs. That appears to be the same although a detail I had never noticed on great coats before.
