I was thinking about going axis for my impression but one of the main problems is the price of the helmets, I already have a m1918 helmet my grandfather brought back from ww1 would that be an acceptable substitute?

I wouldn't use it because it is a WWI vintage. I would just get a m43 cap until I had saved enough for a repro helmet.

I know that on Ebay you can get repro helmets for around 60-70 bucks. An M43 cap is a good alternative though.

Well if your imp is volksturmm you could just use it as your "old uniform" helmet. Just say your a WW1 vet. Though it is mint I wouldnt ruin it..

Early in WW2 there were considerable amounts of WW1 style helmets in service. This includes the Invasion of France as well.

I have pictures of SS in an older WW1 helmet Weapons of the SS I believe is the book. However you have to look at if it was really common. You want to portray the common average Soldat in the war. You can find pictures or some background to back almost anything you want to make into an impression but it is up to you. a M43 Field cap is a wonderful compromise that will look just great.

Do not use a WW1 helmet....it'll ruin it. When it comes to original gear, I only use what I have 2 of - one can get ruined the other will stay mint and never get used...

Besides, a ww1 pattern helmet is not good for a late war scenario. Personally I don't recall have seen a single one during the later stages of the war?

Ya, i would definitely have to say... go with something other then a ww1 helmet. I do use alot of original items, because usually they hold up better then repros and some times they are cheaper. But a helmet.. well unless its perfect i would say dont use it.. plus i wouldnt use much original ww1 gear anyways... i have 2 things a mag pouch and a canteen.. but they are in ok shape. So... well.. its up to you then i guess. -Cary

Who fought the battle of Berlin? The Volksturmm...Who made up the Volksturmm? The civilians, some were old WW1 veterans...Im not sure where I read it but It said somewhere that WW1 veterans put their old uniforms back on to fight once more...Basically dont wear a ww1 helmet, unless your doing some sort of a volksturmm impression.

Google Images: Early war SS helmets = this: www.german-helmets.com/SS%20Helmets-TRANSITIONAL.htmLooks like you could be good with a WW1 helmet up till 1941. Wouldn't be "correct" for anything the Amis were involved in. Go ahead and buy one of those M43 caps for late war and you should be good.

Yeah but if the helmet is original and in good condition, I would not use it. It is alot older than WWII stuff. Plus I wouldnt advise re-painting it unless it is all coneved in rust.

Yeah, you don't see many French reenactors(seems the vendors haven't come up with a way to reproduce period white flags yet ;D). Or any Polish reenactors for that matter. Click

In answering the helmet question, nearly everything is correct, of course they would reuse helmets from the first world war! Guys, this is WAR. That doesn't mean Liberal hissy fit, it means war. You issued everything you had. If it functioned, it was issued. HOWEVER, whether it is correct or not should not dictate your decision, completly. This helmet probably has some sentimental value, since it was brought back by your grandfather. Leave it as is. Use a substitute for the time being, no need to ruin a family heirloom for airsoft.

lostbattalions has a pretty good helmet if you can shell out $200. As far as the paint job, thehelmetpainter.com is pretty awesome. ive not sent a helmet to him but plan to in the future.

I have one of the repro helmets from Sturm/Mil-Tec and are fairly good. Old BGS shells and inner repro (with markings). Problem is (besides being more expensive there than here) that some of them were built by some lazy idiot and fixed the liners drilling outer and inner ring and not putting the ring that fixes the pins from the inside. Now that seems corrected, but many of the old (bad done) ones are the ones popping around ebay more often than not. And their helmet cover in splinter pattern are not bad, either, but come "factory aged" and used looking.
