To be honest, I would buy one of the springer conversion models that some members are making here before I bought a Tanaka or Marushin Mauser. You're gonna get great tech support if needed from the guys who've built these from the ground up. Just my opinion tho'. Mike

The Tanaka Kar 98 is excellent and a hard shooter but like all gas rifles has some pluses and minuses. The loud report of a gas gun is cool. (Something you don't get from a springer.) The action is smooth and authentic both in effort and sound. The downside is the guns need to be visually adapted to look like a field weapon. (Stock darkened and aged) and gas isn't consistent in terms of firing characteristics. They shoot harder in hot weather which can vary greatly just in the course of a day. With the limited rate of fire you want consistent shots since each shot has to count! They are not very useful in winter weather at all. Magazines for gas guns are very expensive and can be problematic (seals wear out, they develope leaks etc.) In addition you have to buy, store and mess with gas which can be both expensive and a pain.
The Springers are consistent, generally built from actual field rifles for the added coolness factor and shoot hard and consistently. The bolt action effort is somewhat harder then with a gas but for most that I have fired not especially hard. Spare mags are cheap and there is very little to go wrong with a spring powered gun. Unlike a gas gun that may have leaked gas when you shoulder and fire a springer you have a high confidence factor that it's going to fire.
Prices for the customs range greatly as does the quality although typically what I've seen being built and sold from our members are very impressive and should represent guns that a guy can own and operate effortlessly for years. As with any price quote such as the one above regarding Redwolf be sure to add in the shipping costs so you're looking at a realistic total.
