Does anyone have any tips for wearing low boots with gaiters? I have great difficulty keeping the gaiters on the boots in the field, as whenever I crouch they seem to start riding up my trousers.
Any recommendations would be great!

Are you wearing modern combat boots or repro/original low boots? I have heard that the gaitors dont work with modern (high) boots.

Assuming you're wearing low boots close to the style of those worn by the Germans you have a few options. One, you can double up your socks if you have the room or can find comfort in doing so. You can also grab some material to wrap around that area in order to add bulk, but again, determine whether or not that this will be comfortable for you. What worked for me was a good, thick pair of socks, for obvious comfort reasons, plus to add bulk to the area where the gaiters will go. Next move your buckles back a bit...that means a little re-stitching is involved. Since you only have to punch through a thin patch of leather you shouldn't have any issues getting your needle through with a thimble...just make sure you have a strong needle and thread (Sewing Awl or Waxed thread available at Tandy) would be preferable. Mike Here's an article on Gamaschen btw: www.dererstezug.com/Gamaschen.htm

Another thing you could do...and it's entirely up to you, I know a guy who experimented with adding a rivet to the Gamaschen and boots, connecting them together in such a way that it wouldn't be noticeable. Sewing them together would do the trick too but I wouldn't do either of them. Personally, I've been toying around with the idea of adding a footstrap to my M37 trousers, much like the M43s to keep them in place. Yes it's "wrong" but you can also add 2 internal buttons to hold the footstraps in place when you're not using them-- say, in a barracks environment when you don't want them to be seen. Jackboots are so much easier to work with. Mike

I had the same problem, so I ditched the gatiors and just pull my wool socks up and over the top of the boot. It was commonly done, you just blouse your pants into the socks and it is very comfortable.
