Interesting pic I came across. This German looks like a guy I went to high school with. I always liked the leather greatcoats. Have yet to see one in the "Working on it" or "Stitch-Knot-See" pics.....Hmmmm....  |

It's an interesting picture and I assume it is late war. Did they issue leather great coats to enlisted. I don't know. Perhaps he was wearing it to cover his SS uniform? Anybody got a different idea?

The German military did not issue enlisted soldiers OR Officers leather greatcoats. They were purchased on the side by the Officers who could afford them, and from what I've read they were very expensive. They were authorized for use by Officers only. |

Partially right Doom, Not only officers could buy things, enlisted men could as well. If they could afford it, they wanted they could buy it...but it doesnt necessarily mean their superiors didnt eat them out for doing such. Ive seen pics with Schutzes wearing officers caps etc. Again, if you could afford it, you could buy it.

Reminds me of one of my favorite video clips. I don't know if anyone else's seen it, but it's from really late war when the Germans are surrendering enmasse to escape the Russians. This one SS guy's sitting on the side of the road with a bunch of heer guys. An MP comes along and yanks his SS collar tab out from under his overcoat where he was trying to hide it. As the MP walks away the guy gives him the dirtiest look - priceless.

Well he is an officer, he has an officers belt and buckle. Perhaps it is a motorcyclist coat?

There is no doubt he is an Officer. His SS collar tab is surrounded by white piping.
