How many zelts and pole set will I need to make something akin to a US GI WW2 tent. I know you only carried a shelter half and all that on the US side but 1 zelt as far as I can tell makes a piss poor blanket not much of a tent. I'd like to attend my next event and sleep in a zelt made tent. Any help greatly appreciated.

The pole set consists of 4 poles end to end, I believe. And the zelts are 4 in total to make the tent. Mike and I lucked out and bought a used one at a reenactment event. Dirt cheap (reasonable) Still don't have real stakes for it and are using some Flaggrantly Wrong light aluminum ones but everything in good time.

Thanks I found a wonderful resource right here. www.deutschesoldaten.com/I should know enough to search before I ask. Thanks for your comment back though. Is the 4 man one big enough for you and your brother? or just 1 of you? A US shelter will sleep two kinda close quaters but it works fine? Any suggestions from anyone on the best price/place to get these. I can't afford 4 at one time.

Great site for zelt info. Shows different uses, and how to set up different types of tents with it. www.zeltbahn.net/

Once we set up the tent and take pics its off to find better sleeping arrangements. In April when it was 15 degrees we appropriated a peasant woman's farmhouse. (translated - we slept in the field host's heated garage while others froze). In July the tent went up and we laid out on the sunken iron barge under the stars. In August, the tent went up and once again we moved the local peasants out of a heated structure with screened windows. (Don't really like mosquitos) As a German you have to be crafty and comfortable. Sure, we showed our NCO's that we knew how to pitch a tent and then found something better when they weren't looking. The four sided tent was meant to sleep two and the other two of the four were to guard.

It was meant to sleep 3 one on guard.
Yes it takes 4 zelts to make a tent. 8 makes a house. The only thing is the repop zelts don't come water-repelant like the OGs.

Ersatz you should sell those to someone who would perfer to use them as intended maybe? I normally take a modern big ass dome tent to events but would like to at some point or another use a more authentic tent. Can the repro tents be treated to make them waterproof?

the repros zelths can be made waterproof , there are 2 ways , one is to buy canvas water proofing spray from a good camping supply store , the other involves a more flammable way to do it by using a brush to spread a mixture of parafin wax and venzine on the zelth. I would go with the commercial spray on water proofing.

The spray-on water proofing works remarkably well and I second Adlers recommendation. It will last for several trips. We in the Pacific Northwest know a thing or two about water proofing!

Canvak is your friend. You can get it at Cabelas, it's 20 bucks for a large container.

The german Soldier carried a shelter QUARTER... which he used as a rain pancho or he would gather a few buddies to make a full zelt tent out of 4

Koz and I slept in the all grey one with the FJ helmet on top. You were try inside but if you touched any on the walls you got soaked right away.

cool zelts pics. Was the helmet on the top tip commony done? seems like a great idea to keep rain from getting in the spaces at the top.

Excellent information on this thank all of you for pics and info. I have many things to get to keep improving my impression but damn it a big round orange tent really kills the mood for me sometimes Dru were those zelt tents you stayed in treated with the waterproofing that has been mentioned here?

I think the tent Dru stayed on was treated once , it needs a new treatment , my Italian tent wasn't treated , but it still has some of the original treatment left on it so i'll need to do a treatment before the next event. And yes the helmet on top of the tent was done to keep the rain out of were all the zelths come together on the grommets.

ottoss, please don't bring back a thread that's been idle for 3 months. Post your offer in the airsoft and impression market section instead.
