I used to hold these annually on the weekend after Thanksgiving but there werent adequate appropriately aged kids in the neighborhood over the last few years. The events are intended as a Father son deal limited to residence of our Timberline Community in Sammamish WA. We hold it in the large central greenbelt which is about 12 acres with a nice trail network throughout. Since I provide the uniforms and a lot of the weapons and props I usually go with a Western Europe WW2 theme. The largest event I have had so far was 44 players. This weekend we only had 19 but it was still fun.
I was busy getting people costumed up and setting up the skirmishes. It was cold and fires arent allowed in the common area but several propane heaters were on hand and I have a number of Army tents so warming up between skirmishes went pretty well. I
We had five battles which lasted from 15 minutes to an hour 15 each. My favorite was a roadblock clearing missjin which we repeated three times. switching teans in offensive and defensive roles. The offense could attack from anywhere altbough the terrain and time restraints insured most were frontal attacks. The attackees had to neutralize the position sufficiently to plant demolitions on the dragons teeth. With regen rules and by design the attackers outnumbered the defenders 5 to 1. The defenders on one occassion ambushed the attackers well short of the objective pretty much wiping them out and then fell back to the objective. On another attack the offense sent a small group way around to attack from the rear simultaneous to the frontal attack. The risk of course was that they were far from regen.
another popular mission was a simple movement to contact by roughly equal sized forces. We switched starting positions and regen locations and repeated the same mission.
Most players were armed witb my springer carbines. (i still have a dozen of them.). My homemade 30 Cal went down so my BAR served as the MG while my STG44 served as the Germans automatic. Both sides had 2 submachine guns with 3 lowcap magazines each.
I will gather pictures and with a little technical help will get them posted. My costumes are by no means reenactor qualitg but overall the guys looked pretty good. We switched nationalities around in the course of the day so some of the players at times were botb German and US. When you see OD pants worn by both on occassion that is why as we just switched tunics, headgear and web gear. The velcro leggings were a Godsend. So glad I did a bhnch of them up. A couple moms fixed up some stew for midday chow but were upset seeing their 14 year olds in German uniforms. Another reason we swapped things around. Living history is hard to explain sometimes. Good thing I'm charming! All in all a successful event Special thanks to Ed M and my buddy Dwight for helping me out as cadre controllers. Neither have military backgrounds but looked the part and were very convincing. We wore green armbands as observers but all got shot a lot. I had full mesh face masks for everyone under 16. I think next year will be bigger as everyone had a great time. Id love to do spring game if there is enough interest. We will have to secure another venue as the greembelt trails are too popular to close down in the nice weather.
