You guys should have seen the "Tan Water" zelts that were coming out of Hong Kong about 2 years ago. Yes..."Tan & Water" zelts. LOL They have since come to their senses and stopped making them. They are still pumping out Dot 44 helmet covers and M43 caps though.

Got to love 'creative history' a lfew of our guys went for dot 44 helmet covers, personally i think bread bag straps or inner tube looks loads better.

Same with all the Dot44 FJ stuff out...
It is true there were Dot44 SS FJ smocks...but bandoleers and helmet covers is flat out wrong!

I realy like the tan & water and the splinter smocks. I was thinking of starting with ethier a field grey uniform , or the field grey M40 pants , serves shirt , and a tan &water or splinter smock.

You should get a feldbluse before you get a smock.
Reenactors and airsofters go completely over the top with camo stuff. Your feldgrau uniform should be your primary outfit. The smocks are "nice to have" items.

Ok as a quick example.
Using Brian l. Davies 'German army unifomrs and insignia 1939-45' i'll compare.
Pictures/plates where all visible soldiers are in feldgrau or snow camo and helmets are bare, have breadbag straps, netting, chickenwire or inner tube (including improvised bedsheet camo): 254
Plates where even *one* soldier is wearing *any* splinter or tan and water and i've been generous to include helemt covers and officers made tunics out of ss camo: 18
And of the above 18 camo items (which includes zelts) Tan and water items: 2
Shows you how rare it was really
Davies book is pretty much the bible IMO too.
As tedious an exercise as that was to do (only took a few mins to be honest) i hope it reinforces the point of the rarity of cmao in the heer.

I was looking throught My Osphery men at arms , The german army 1938-45 (5) /western front 1939-45 , and many of the Photos and plates show camo smocks .

Osprey are not the best source, trust me. Good for an overview of a period but not gospel.
However you obviously want a tan and water smock, go buy one, just stop asking us to help you justify it as being accurate.
Honestly its like a less than 1% issue item but you have your heart set on it and its not hurting anyone so go for it , but please do buy your feldgrau first as its going to look daft in wool trousers a shirt and smock, if you're going to go down that route perhaps a HBT pair of trousers.
I going to stop saying this now as it doens tappear to be going in but
Camo items in the heer other than the zelt are incredibly rare.
If you *really* like splinter pattern get luftwaffe field division loadout, a *lot* of their guys in france and the rest of NWE had splinter pattern combat jackets which were worn without a fliegerblouse sometimes.

Thank you for the advise . I will buy the Field grey uniform first , and thatk you for the info about the osphery books . I have one more question and it is not to use you to try and justify the buying of the smock . I was woundering how acurat the spear head camo smocks are .

Cant help you there as i dont own one, on with osprey again though i bought their 'british battle dress' title a month or so back, its got about ten glaring erors in it that even a casual student would pick out, a lot of them are like that.
They are great to get a feel for a new project but always try and work off multiple sources

I know how to do reserch , but as of right now I only have accec to a vary small amount of books that even mention camo , although I amtrying to change that , most of my library consist of ancient , and Napoleonic books , although I have read several hundred books on the topic of WW2 . I know a lot more about snipers and tank and U-boat crews , than the regular infantry . Although you should note that my library is still growing , and that about half of the books that I read were about the American forces . In the future I think I will buy the book that you suggested to me. Thank you for your time .
