A common expression back in the day was: "He bought the farm" in place of "He died". I have no idea where it originated or how it became tied to death? Perhaps the depression with so many bank reposessions? Does anyone know?

I'm not sure, but the impression I got was that it was sort of a reference to the GI insurance policy, which I think was $10,000. A lot of soldiers still came from rural backgrounds and the parents/survivors would use the death benefit to pay off or pay down the mortgage on the farm. Literally buying the farm. I could be wrong, but I thin I heard something like that many years ago.
