i've been giving some serious thought into whether or not i should portray an SS sniper, or wehrmacht sniper. i tend to think i should go with wehrmacht, as the SS is more along the lines of the 101st in the allied area. just not that many should be out there. there should be some SS and some 101st, but they shouldn't be the majority, therefore, i want to know a couple things about wehrmacht snipers.
1. Did they get the Snipers patch as well? (you know, the one with the bird?) 2. What kind of camo did they use? asides from the splinter, that is. Would it be okay to have a chicken wire basket on my helmet? 3. What kind of gear did they have? 4. What kind of special *sniper* items did the wehrmacht use? I know the SS had the face veils, but what did the wehrmacht use?
hope you guys can answer my questions, and i look forward to seeing you on the battlefield, whether your friend or foe!

1 dont know 2 Splinter, chicken wire is ok 3. Same as SS snipers 4 You could go with a jute net like (see picture) put half on the helmet half draped over your face. Also I sugest watching the German Sniper Video. www.videosift.com/video/World-War-II-German-Sniper-Training-FilmThats my net hanging, usually I just double it up around my helmet.

For camouflage, you have the option of: A) Splinter, early war, or B) Splinter, late war. The only difference is a almost unnoticable change in the coloring.
Also, please, don't base an impression on the kind of "special gear" a certain person got. Portray the norm. For the love of God, portray the norm...

Did they get the Snipers patch as well? (you know, the one with the bird?) The Scharfschuetzen-Abzeichen (sniper's badge) was instituted on August 20th 1944 by order of the Fuhrer , before that snipers would just be awarded the Iron Cross. And Wehrmacht includes most of the German Armed Forces Wehrmacht Heer is the Army Wehrmacht Luftwaffe is the Air force Wehrmacht SS well that's the SS Wehmacht Kriegsmarine is the Navy So when you want to talk about the regular army you called them "Heer" , not Wehrmacht. I'm not trying to be an ass , just wanted you let you know that. ;D

I've understood that they didn't field use these. Why? If captured, what do you think Russians, Americans or Brits would have done, when you are wearing a badge telling everybody that you've shot X number of enemies?

Thats right it was not generally worn on field uniforms (same as the 'anti - partisan' badge, being caught with that was a death sentence).
Its common for snipers of all nationalitis to do their best to disguise their job in case of capture, they rarley get taken alive.
As one veteran said, if you're mates get killed by a machine gun bullet or a shellblast you can believe it was a stray , its not personal, if a sniper kills someone it was entirely deliberate.
For a heer sniper:
Kit wise splinter is fine but dont overdo it, late war tan and water smocks are worn by some snipers as the have an integral face veil on some.
There are quite rare splinter balaclava hoods made from old zelts, they were sometimes worn, i've pics to show that.
Most important thing is your k98 or g43 with the right type of scope.
Getting the wartime scopes and mounts is getting harder.

russian, i'm not choosing to portray a sniper for the gear, i'm portraying one because i love anything sniper, and just want to know what kind of special gear they would need, such as not having certain items, as they would be in the way. i'm fine with just basic gear. but i know you were just trying to help me out, and i should have made it more clear. adler, i actually didn't know that, thanks for the info. i'll start using to the word heer instead. and as for a k98 with correct scope, i want to and i'm planning to get a ZF39 scope and mount, hope that is good because i love the look of it, and i'm sure they probably would have used them. i'm getting a repro of the scope by the way.
and i'm not totally sure yet if i'm going heer; i just want to know what kind of things they would have in case i didn't want to go SS. thank you for the help. i might have more questions, and if there is something i didn't ask, feel free to post some pics, anything.
