Here's short Youtube from a living history unit about WWII field kitchens. Some of that equipment (or something similar) was still in use in the early 70's. Might still be, for all I know. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEt4rrtEN_k

The guy who runs the Nam events upon Vermont has a full blown field kitchen set up and its awesome for events. I doubt they changed much from WW2. I had a bunch of the Merriment canisters but got an offer I couldn't refuse and sold them. WW2 thermal canisters were oval while my eras were rectangular. (easier to stack and store). They mentioned that the cooks cleaned the mess kits for the troops. Certainly not the case when I served. I remember scrubbing and rinsing in a series of heated garbage cans. No doubt a trip down memory lane for you too Volks! When I was an officer (I was enlisted for my first years in the Army) I typically ate last and cleaned up last (as was the norm) By that time even the final rinse canisters were pretty skanky.
