First off I want to say thank you for all those who attended this event. I realize that the postponed may have inconvenience some, so I was pleasantly surprised by the turn out of roughly 25 players.
With both sides evenly matched in numbers, the prelude to the game was encouraging for an even and prolonged battle. The first game mode was one to which the Germans were to occupy and defend the Village of Schmidt (where their flag flew proudly) and they also had the option of occupying or falling back to the position of High Point designated Kommerscheidt.
U.S. forces rallied at an area to the North and North East of the German occupations. The GI's moved out with their forces split into 3 parts. First was a squad that was to recon Kommerscheidt. Once there, it was noted that the Germans chose not to occupy that position as of yet. This was a necessary and important recon as if ignored, the Germans could have attacked the U.S. forces from the rear. With this information factored in, the recon team attacked the Village of Schmidt from the west. They encountered very little resistance as the Germans seem to set up most of their defense positions on the North and East sides of the Village. Simultaneously with the attack from the West, GI's encountered tough resistance from the Germans on the North and Eastern side of the Village for over an hour. Casualties were high on both sides but the Americans ultimately prevailed by capturing their flag and occupying the Village. Those Germans who were still standing fled to their fall back position of Kommerscheidt. With the German flag in tow, the victorious Americans returned to their original position North East of Kommerscheidt.
After a brief break in the action, the Germans now mounted a counter attack on the GI's in an effort to retrieve their flag and return to the Village of Schmidt. Time after time, the Germans were repelled and never really came close to breaching the Americans position and taking back their flag. It was after an hour or so that the break was called for all to tend to their wounded and recharge their troops for a final attack.
By now, the Americans were reeling in their last two victories and they were very confident in their pending defense of the Village of Schmidt. The Germans, their forces weakened by defeat and missing some of their original numbers, tried in vain to finally re-capture their Village and their flag, to which they could once again fly with pride. German attacks seem to baffle some of the GI's as they observed that the Germans never seemed to mount an attack of any substance. Most of their forces were teams of 2 or 3 at the most. Even with 2 MG's at their disposal, they never tried to mount an organized assault. The two MG's they had could out-reach and out-fire any of the Americans guns. So the GI's were waiting and readying themselves for potential suppressing fire by the MG's while the rest of the Infantry advanced. That never came. Instead, one MG team stayed in a fixed covered position with no fire and maneuver occurring. Some GI's seem to taunt the MG team trying to get them to move. This never occurred. The Germans never came close to taking the Village thus adding up to a clean sweep for the Americans.
That was the game play modes. But more important than that is that it was great seeing some old friends and meeting new players as well. In particular, I was very pleased to see Sam Johnson rejoin our ranks. Sam, who I haven't seen in over 10 years was fortunately in town for Thanksgiving and was able to attend. So the postponement at least gave me that. So all in all the day and the event was a great success and most importantly a lot of fun for all.
I look forward to hosting another one some time in the spring.
Cheers,
