The Tanaka is a great rifle. The Marushin is neat but isn't a capable skirmisher for reasons discussed at length in other threads. Airsoft Extreme is a great retailer and usually has them in stock. For the sake of practicality I wish airsoft forums would refer to this style of rifle as a bolt action rifle not a sniper rifle. SNIPER Rifle and airsoft are mutually exclusive terms. there is no way any airsoft player using an airsoft rifle perfoms in a capacity anything like a sniper.
The range even with significant upgrades is only marginally better. (ground that can be closed in a matter of seconds) The accuracy is laughably bad so pin point targeting is a figment of the players imagination and the limitations of a bolt action rifle vs a semi auto or fully auto is significant. Also at range one or two things will happen. The shooter will think he's hitting his target (when he's not) as what he's seeing as a round dropping off his targets chest is really the loss of inertia causing the BB to literally drop out of the sky at the end of its trajectory. Or he actually does hit the target at range but there is so little momentum at extreme range so the BB hits wihout the player even knowing he's been hit. A triple hit at the same inertia is definitely more noticeable and registers more consistently as a hit. Hence semi and fully auto fire is more practical in a game of Honor.
The whole sniper mentality in airsoft is a joke and it's time players start acknowldeging it. I'm not for a minute saying there is no role for a "sniper" but it is a very limited one and not at all authentic.
A couple of key considerations. If you're going to take on a sniper role, do it well. That means practice your art. Know your weapon and learn intimately its capabilities and limitations. Actually fire at long ranges and check out your results or lack thereof. You'll be surprised. Learn to estimate ranges effectively so you don't waste shots at targets that are out of range or engage players inside the field established minimums. (if there are any) Sniper rifles shooting at increased velocity only enjoy slightly greater range (20 feet maximum over a stock AEG) but inside of 50 feet the damage the round can do on exposed skin vs a stock AEG is exponentially greater. Be responsibel if you're armed with a much more destructive rifle at close range respect that fact.
Take turns with a buddy standing by a target down range so you can immediately let him know if he's hitting it or not. This activity alone will be extrmely educational. You'll learn first hand just how bizarre the tarjectory of airsoft BBs are. When they lose inertia they really lose inertia. 25 gram out of the same gun will fire father then the 20 gram you swear were going farther! You'll note a significantly tighter shot group with the .25 gram. There's a reason Marui ships their guns with .25 gram!
Most airsofters never take any steps to train and learn their craft. A lot of field arguments have more to do with a lack of training then a lack of integrity. I'm tired of shooting a gillie suited sniper in the back thinking he registered the hit only to have him "sense that something happened" turn around and shoot me in the back with his 550FPS rifle at 20 feet away.
All airsofters should have to "take a course" and folks with upgraded guns should have to show some level of certification. That's my opinion and I'll get off my soap box now.

I’ll come right out and say it. I would not recommend sniping at all in the sport of Airsoft.
I have played with hundreds of different players. I have played games with 100 plus people at a time. I have played with and against many different teams. I have been playing for 5 years now and I have only ever seen two people in all that time that have handled the role of being a sniper. Their roles were always limited and not more effective than sending regular infantry.
The sniper role in my opinion is limited, and hardly useful in a team oriented sport were communication and tactics are above all else, the deciding factor in a game.

In large games Lion Claws, Restore Order etc. Where company and even Battalion tactics are employed snipers are limited roles (One team per platoon) They are typically released earlier into the Area of operations and really serve as scouts and in some cases flank security or screens. When you have the right folks in the role and they have a combination of stealth, situational awareness, good map reading skills, good radio skills, and maturity when it comes to decision making they can be a critical element. Those attributes are rare in airsoft even in the elite national events that seem to attract the very best players.
