Well...turns out we are both wrong I read two articles saying he was a "T5 equal to a sgt" but it's backwards- he was actually a T3 which is the same as a regular Tech Sgt- www.506pireasyco.com/George Luz.htm Of course it's possible that he left the service as a 'Tech 3/E3' and during most of the war and the series he was a Tech 4/E4 but of course he started his career and obviously the series as a private, so his rank progressed. -G

a tech sgt . is not the same as a T-3.... it's the next step up in grade.what they are doing is confusing modern paygrades(E-1,E-2,etc.),with the WW2 technician ratings...techs made more money than their "hardstripe" equivalents but they weren't considered higher in rank.in other words,if you had a T-3 and a staff sgt.,the staff sgt. would be higher in rank. the standard thing was that you usually came out of a specialized school, like radioman,as a T-5 and then moved up in the normal manner.alot of guys didn't get promoted to a normal rank for their time in until right at the end of the war when the paperwork wonks were catching up on things and alot of good COs were trying to get their enlisted guys more points to get them home and cycle newer people in for occupation duty.
