Does anyone test and document the accuracy of any airsoft guns?
I see claims of accuracy to 80ft for example. What does that mean. You can hit a 20'x40' side of a barn at 80 ft or something the size of a penny?
I'm looking at getting a bolt action (k98, enfield or springfield) or semi-auto rifle but it would'nt be much fun if someone with a thompson smg has better accuracy.
I am considering a Tanaka k98 but I hear reports that some electrics is more accurate and more convinient.
Is there a durable and accurate WW2 bolt action rifle I should consider?
Thanks, Martin

I hit a coke can on the second shot at atleast 200 feet with my kar98. You could not do that with an elecric gun like a thompson. people generally agree the kill zone of the electric guns is 150 feet, it becomes a waste of ammo to try to hit people further than that, though it is done often with super high capacity magazines. By simply limiting the ammount of ammo a thompson user carries, you can give the kar 98 owner many advantages in airsoft. -Gordak

I agree completely with Gordak on the effective range of AEGs being 150 feet. Even upgraded guns generally lose inertia beyond that range. It looks like they are going further but they are not. I typically consider effective range, the range at which I could hit a target slightly bigger then a pie plate. (head and shoulders of an opponent since that's generally all that's exposed.) The Tanaka Kar 98 is one of the very best out of the box guns for range an accuracy but it is airsoft so the projetile is round and relatively light. It is greatly effected by wind (especially at it's optimal ranges where the inertia has been slowed) Round balls don't fly very straight either. Think musket here. You are not going to get precision shots (silver dollar hits) with any airsoft rifle beyond 30 feet outdoors no matter what people say. The Tanaka will get you somewhat greater accuracy for somewhat greater ranges (50 more feet or so) Provided it's a warm day with little wind. 200 feet hitting a human (you were actually aiming at) is about as good as it gets with any consistency and the very best guns. In the NW or any foliated wooded area that's fine as with reasonable stealth and good use of terrain most engagments are within 100 feet and at that any AEG or gas gun will consistently hit a pue plate sized target if the player is any kind of marksman at all. (I have seen players legitimately miss from 10 feet away and swear they didn't miss) Practice people!!!!! Some airsoft players are the worst shots I've ever seen in my life.
I think sub machine guns representing pistol ammo should have to turn off their hop up to approximate reduced firepower and range and be restricted to low cap magazines. AEGs representing riflemen should also have low caps and be restricted to semi auto fire and so on so the normal and realistic trade offs are in place.
The final word here is every airsoft player should spend time really really learning the capability and limitations of their weapon (especially at maximum range) and their own skill and practice, practice, practice so they can play effectively and honestly. I've heard so many instances where people thought their opponents weren't calling their hits and it was in reality because they were well beyond practical range or the player just wasn't a very good shot.
When my son was 14 and starting out in the hobby I had him fire thousands of rounds before I ever took him out to play and he knew what his gun could do and how to quickly change mags, how to clear it if it jammed and how to aim and fire effectively. He didn't waste shots on targets that were out of range and he hit what he aimed at.

"Some airsoft players are the worst shots I've ever seen in my life." this is so true, Im even guilty... I could hit people pretty quick but i always used the "walk in the white bbs" method of hitting targets. 400 round high caps and huge batteries can cause this affliction. Now im reformed/cured, and I even say we should play with black BBs!! -Gordak

Every third or fourth in white! I actually do that. I also use the green stealth BBs which work fine for most of my guns. Folks can't see them coming a big plus. But you do have to actually aim!
