Hi All, Ben here. Just outta' curiousity, have any of you heard of taking a 1979, fully metal Marushin MP40, and converting it completly into "airsoft"? The reason why I ask, is because I actually own one, which as we all know, is designed to fire PFC caps. Yes, the gun looks pretty cool when it is firing, but seen as how my reenactors won't get along with its lack of conventional blank firing, the airsoft world will get first dibbs at its potential. I was fartin' around with wondering if, say, maybe a TOPP internal, or maybe an Asahi style (complete with hose and bottle) would do the trick. If any of you know someone who has done this successfully, please let me know. If not, what are you oppinions???

Whatever you do, I wouldn't recommend putting TOP internals in it for obvious reasons.

Asahi Mp40 internals should fit in damn near anythignthere is not much to them but I can't gurantee they will. Furthermore having owned the ASahi MP40 I can't reccomend using the internals they were lame.

I converted a Marushin MP40 in to airsoft before Top released theirs. I still like mine better then the Top one. It was a newer Marushin though with a mostly plastic body. I used a highly modified TM AK gearbox.

Not to let the secret of the gods out, but Schmitty, was there any intense modifications you had to do to the project? I know you're big into welding and torch-cutting; did you find yourself having to do any of this in your finished product?

I think the full metal pfc mp40 is worth too much, brand new in the box plastic pfc mp40s are 299.

Sell the full metal replica, and get a TOp MP40+PGC box for the money.

I think Mikkel has the right idea. I think you can actually purchase a newer Marushin MP40 for about $175 from some of the Hong Kong dealers. It does have quite a lot of metal parts and looks and feels great. My conversion did not require any welding at all. The gearbox took a lot of major modifications though. Look through the tech section for the Sten AEG thread, Mp40 gearbox mods are very similar.
Considering all the effort, you probably would be better off buying a Top Mp40 and a PGC gearbox for it, I made mine about a year before Top released theirs when their was a lot of doubt that Top would ever release it.

Schmitty
I'm goona try this with my Marushin mp40PFC. I know its a "big ask" but would you be able to post some photos of the internals, it would help a lot to see how you did this
Thanks

These pictures where from right after I finished the conversion. I later replaced the JB weld holding the bushings with brass plates soldered to the bushings and screwed to the gearbox, then also added the blowback feature. home.comcast.net/~milsom44/mp40video.AVISchmitty

Thus makeing it useless.

Again RB once you actually own a classic and have skirmished with one then you can say something until then your opinion on classic anything is moot. I have owned one classic and I have test fired several others from many manufacuters. They all performed bad. Looked good shot bad. Gordak on the other hand has quite a bit of experience with classics especially the Asahi MP40's I believe he has said he had some luck with them. I on the other hand wouldn't piss on one if it was on fire..

Marushin is going to release an airsoft 8mm gas blowback MP40. They say in october, but it will be the first time they get the date right.

off topic question but where does the battery go on the top mp40. Way up inside the gun, it's a pain. You have to disassemble the whole thing to put it in.
