I just got my MP40 up and running woohoo. Didn't take as long as I thought it would. I had to take parts of two broken mechboxes to make one working mechbox. shimmed it, lubed it. and she works. The original gun looks like it had a bb jam which made it shear off the last tooth of the piston. Now I jsut have to find the article on converting TOP mags to hicaps can't seem to find that on Arnies but I was sure it was on there...any help in that area appreciated.

Another heads-up AAD I've replaced the spring in my mp40 with a 120 What a difference, more straight line flight with the bb's, flat battery after 1500 beebs my last spring was chronoing at around the very lo 200 mark 180~205 fps After taking it out to try another, i NOTICED that it was about 10mm shorter than the other 2 springs i have, (know doubt its been lying compressed after the last time i used it) I'm skirmishing this Sunday coming, that will give me the chance to chrono all 3 springs i have. 1J....M100.... M120, I'll post up the results that i get I'm still non the wiser with this stupid hop-unit, full off Nothing, bb's drop like lead, hop on too much and it jams the bb's, Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr P.S. Russianboy That link you sent is for the old bellows system, i found even with that fix, the gun was still crap

I'm confused. I think 9mm's mp40 is with the PGC gearbox? and AA DAN and russianboy are both talking about original bellows style top gearbox?
DO NOT put an m120 spring into a stock Top mp40 gearbox or you will regret it!!
I have done two PGC gearbox conversions. My own has been working great. But the one I did for Hellmutt has the same hop up problem 9mm described. It goes from not enough hop up to jamming the barrel (so much hop up the barrel is restricted) One difference is that I have been using .20 ammo on mine while hellmutt was using .25 BB's.

What about type or brand of Ammo? Bios/regular or brand A/ brand B? Russianboy suggested I bend the tappet plate front forward a little like you suggest on a TOP box. I found that it doesn't seem to make a difference on mine. I'll try it again and see what comes of it.

For clarity's sake from now on I will refer to a Top MP-40 with a PGC gearbox as mp40pgc.
The mp40pgc includes a totally different gearbox, barrel, hopup setup so problems and solutions for one type are not relevant to the other type (including hop up problems).
My stock Mp40 brand new just out of the box only fired at about 160fps. I realized that the tappet plate was not fully sealing off the barrel so I bent the tab forward and that fixed it. In retrospect I realize that the tappet plate was probably bent inside the gearbox (seems to be a common problem with the Top system). Here's how to test if you have a good seal: (this also works for marui style gearbox)
Make sure there is no ammo in the gun. Stop the gearbox with the tappet plate all the way forward. Pulse the trigger until it stops in the correct place (on a marui the spring should be uncompressed and nozzle all the way forward).
With a piece of small rubber tubing push one end against the business end of the brass airsoft barrel so that it forms a good seal against it.
blow in the other end with your mouth. There should be little to no air escaping. If there is: feel around the hop up and loading port for the air escaping. If you can feel air then you have a problem with the seal between the nozzle and barrel (that can be caused by bent tappet plate on Top gearbox). If you can hear air blowing inside the gearbox you have a ruptured bellows (or poor o-ring or cyl head seal on Marui).
On the mp40pgc: Hellmutt was using .25 stealth BB's and his hop up was either too little (no hop effect) Or too much (BB's would stop in the barrel.
I have been using .20 stealths and haven't had this problem.
I have noticed on several other guns I own that with .25 ammo I have to have the hop up all the way up to achieve the hop effect. This will definitely cause more jamming problems. Maybe this is one reason to use .20's

Schmitty sums it up well Good idea mate, WE should start refering to it as Top mp40 (out of the box) and Top mp40PGC (conversion) I thought AAD was meaning he has the new PGC box The 120 spring im refering to is in the PGC box i would'nt dream of putting anything in to the Top box, as its piss poor
