Lol in the american army section, there is a picture from the 1990's battle of the bulgereenactment, you can tell by all the very big boys moping around and the fact that I was there. We should all email the site about that so they take it off www.ww2incolor.com/gallery/us_army/battle_of_the_bulge-Gordak

That's funny cause that picture jumped out at me as I flipped through the pictures. It wasn't the size of the guys. (I figured they were just wearing alot of clothes) It was the illogical lumping of vehicles with the AT gun un limbered and just sitting there and the M-18 and haltrack like they were. Something about it just didn't look right to me.
I'd say leave them in their ignorance. It's actually very funny! Incidently which one is you?

Color film in those days was real persnickety to store and use and didn't lend itself to harsh field conditions. That's why color film from the period (both still and motion camera) was so rare. Many of the stills are actually excerpts from film shot by George Stevens (Academy Award Winning producer) who was the head of the SHAEF signal Corp film division. He travelled through Europe with his personal brownie color camera and shot rolls and rolls of film. He sent it all home with his orther memorabilia and it was discovered by his son who produced a Color documentary with out takes from the rolls. It's an excellent documentary called D-Day to Berlin (The war in color) Much of the current color film from Europe is from his camera. The series The War in Color on the History Channel liberally uses alot of the out takes.
There was more color shot in the Pacific where camera men could return to a ship for processing in just a few days or during the air war where crews returned to the relative stability of an English base.
The pictures on the site are great refernces for such things as jacket shades, mixes of web gear and helmet colors (All over the map!) Note the Blue hood numbers on early war vehicles and the yellow circles on vehicles in the Meditteranean Theater. I love the glamour posed shots for posters and such like the guy with the tin pot and Garand poking his rifle out of the M3 Halftrack or White Scout car. (Hard to tell). Spitfire it's a great find. Thanks for sharing

well I would say this-
A great number of the photos are 'staged' and would not qualify as 'Theater of Operations' photography or pictures from the front- but then, the title of the site is "WWII in color" and since the 'topic' of all the photos is correct, then they are not technically wrong, its a stretch, but true- I do however agree that the reenactment photo titled 'Battle of the Bulge' should either be changed or the picture removed.
As I said alot of the photos are staged, but they appear to have been taken in the 40's so again the site title is still correct. All the photos with the M7 Priest were taken in the California or Aberdeen training grounds. However there are a few pics in the set that were taken in Italy, the Normandy invasion, etc so those are correct 'Battlefield Photos' That last notable exception is the first shot of the Sherman Flamethrower- you can see that it was at an airshow or something modern due to the aircraft hanger buildings in the background- So many of the pictures were taken in the ETO and other places during the fighting, many were 'staged' here at bases where men were training, and one or two have been taken during modern times- I'm sure it was an over sight on the webmasters part.

Some of these are really awesome. I really like the aerial shots. Some of them I'd sware are paintings. Especially the ones of the B-17's
