I am not an axis guy at all but I bought this complete stock set up with the intent to do a Axis bolt action rifle on the order of my Springfields. I thought it was a Kar 98 but the upper handguard is a little different and the stock seems shorter then a typical Mauser, Carbine version? Whatever it has a nice vintage look was cheap (compared to Springfield bits) and looks like it would be quite a bit easier to convert into an airsoft rifle. Does anyone know what it is? Note that the upper handguard wood surrounds the area where the rear site assembly will go.? Odd that the stain is blonde rather then the darker brown or at least I think that it's odd.

2nd Bat - Looks like a Yugo Mauser alright. I have a spare pair of take down disks and the shaft for connecting them that I'll send you as part of the Springfield deal. Add the disks to the stock, and cut the handguard down and it is passable as a 98K. If you are adventuresome you could even notch out the bolt handle recess in the correct location for your donor gun. I see Yugo Mauser's used all the time in reenacting so I figure they make fine airsoft sacrificial lambs.

It also looks a lot like a 1940's KOOTAH or short Persian carabine. Here's a pic of one from the 1930's

It looks very similar to a G33/40(based on the vz33) and the shorter length would be right as the K98 is 1110mm in length and the G33/40 is between 995 and 1000mm in length.

Yugo Mauser is my guess from the pics as well and it will make a fine Axis weapon for you should you decide to convert it.

Thanks guys. That helps alot. It's definitely carbine length not full length and for the sake of argument I'm going with the M48 Yugo theory although the Persina Carbine is quite possible. There are markings on the stock but I don't know what I should be looking for there. Certainly no Waffen markings anywhere that I could see. The stock take down disc would be a nice touch to add. I only recently learned what that was used for. (Pretty cool)
I think I'll leave the upper handguard and build it as is as it's kind of a cool looking stock and everything is there. The fuller length will further hide the base weapon used. It'd work for lots and lots of events and time periods I'm sure up to an including Vietnam. (VC)
Thanks again everybody. I also thought about cutting it down and combining it with an MP40 to build a M-38 like someone on this board did. There'd probably be a better donor gun available down the road however. This is pretty nice complete stock

If you have it finished by the time the "Hurtgen Forest" event or maybe the "Long Winter" i'll have a chance to look at the markings on the stock, but i'm pretty sure it is a Yugo M48.

I agree, Yugo M48. I would like to point out that there are 2 different mausers commonly refered to as Yugo's. The early post war mausers are in fact German wartime built Mauser k98's that have the german markings ground off and the Yugo crest (and some other marks) stamped into the reciever. The Later types (M48) look similar but are post war built, usually lacking the ring in the stock and with wood surrounding the rear sight.

I think with the stock ring and a good apprpriate sling this should end up looking pretty good. I'm not going to lose sleep over the wood ring surrounding the site. I'll need to source the rear site, trigger and magazine base plate and a front site hood as well in order to finish this conversion any thoughts? I'm thinking the gun show is my best bet.

John,
This coming puyallup gunshow on the 13/14 october will be HUGE! Mil vehics, friends of willie and joe, knife show and the annual membership meeting all rolled into one. Get there early. I was going to have a table of WW2 airsoft bits and show off my collection but all display tables sold out in August (over 100). There is a fellow there that will have BAR parts as well for your BAR.
