If you're doing WWII Russian, build an M38 instead of an M44, but know that only artillery and cavalry were issued the carbines. If you are doing a Russian sniper impression, the only way to go is a 91/30 with a turn-down bolt and a mock-up scope (a real scope ain't worth the $$$ for an airsoft impression, IMHO.)

An M38 doesn't have an integral bayonet, the M44 does.

If I may be of some help here. The M44 was late late war and was generally in use widespread after WW2 it does have an integrated fold out bayonet. IF you are not using it on an airsoft field no problems otherwise the M38 was both more widespread in its WW2 use and does not have the bayonet integrated into it. The M44 is essentially an M38 with a folding bayonet added. The M44/38 real steel barrel length is going to be closer to the internal barrel length of a VSR/USR base gun still not exactly the same bit close. The VSR inner barrel is actually longer than the m38 outer barrel. you can make it slightly longer or cut it down your choice. The 91/30 is a lot longer outer barrel wise. You can get a custom tightbore for it that would make your inner barrel longer or go with a shorter inner barrel and as long as it is centered in the outer barrel it should still shoot straight. Hopefully that helped answer some of your question without being too long winded. sorry
