in WW1, Italians only fought on 1 front, which was Northern Italy against the Austro-hungarians. Later in the war they obviously occupied what eventually became Yugoslavia and I'm not sure what it is now, Bosnia? I know I saw a website that was in german that google translated that was an excellent resource about the battles Italy took place in. If you are looking for his service records, that will be very tough. The only thing I can suggest is to contact the Italian war department, and see if they have any records which could take months, maybe even years. I'll try to find a link. Well, I was able to find a webpage with some helpful tips. It is based for people searching for relatives in the Italian navy (regia marina) during WW2, but I would think to find a realative in the army in WW1 would be similar: www.regiamarina.it/research.htm

Which one, the first or second one? The first Ethiopian war was before WW1, and the 2nd Ethiopian war was before the Spanish Civil war, when Mussolini came to power. Also known as the Second Italo-Abyssinian War. Here is some information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Italo-Abyssinian_War

ah, that narrows it down alot. The first Ethiopian war was more of an insurgency composed of 4 divisions. Bersaglieri (sharpshooters), Alpini (mountain troops), Cacciatori (regular infantry) and Askari (African recruits), so he was in any one of the above Italian units excluding Askari. Do you know if he died in Ethiopia, or returned?

Well, knowing that he came from Salerno helps alot. Plus you know he fought in the Ethiopian campaign. What you need to do is either email or send a letter to or call the state archive of Salerno. The problem is that I don't know Italian and also, this website: www.daddezio.com/genealogy/italian/records/PROV-SA.htmlsays that if one does not know specific details or is inexperienced, etc. it may be best to hire a professional to help. The only thing that made me mention this was that the site says that most personally sent inquiries go unanswered. The links on this site did not seem to work right, so here is another I found: wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/SEARCH/BASIS/arcanag/webii/archivio/DDW?M%3D1%26W%3DNOME++%3D+"SALERNO" Good luck! Nick
