I have 2 WWII dated Metal Canteens one has some rust on the inside the other is like brand new but when you fill it with water you can see little flakes of metal in the water. Whats the best way to clean them so you can use them. Hope this is alright in this section wasn't sure where the best spot would be.

This is a pretty easy fix. Here we go:
1. Heat up about 3 cups (24oz) of water in your microwave 2. Pour it into the canteen. 3. Add about 2 cups of fish tank gravel. 4. Shake vigorously for a few minutes.
The gravel will help loosen the flakes of rust. After you rinse out all the gravel you can fill the canteen almost all the way and add about a tea spoon of bleach to disinfect it. Rinse repeatedly a few times and let it air dry.

yea, the way I did mine, was kind of the same as Zak's,
But I also left this rust neutralizer in the canteen for a few hours, then I vigorously cleaned the thing out for a few days with soap and water.

I would just tough it out. A little tetnis never hurt anybody. Just watch out for those stiff joints when you wake up. That is, if you do wake up.

That is, if you do wake up. ^^^I agree^^^ But I just filled mine with tons of boiling water and shook like there was no tommorow, because there probably wouldn't be one for me if I didnt ;D You'd be amazed at whats in a 1918 dated canteen, or disgusted, or both. You obvoisly haven't seen a toilet flange with wax gasket on it and brown material covering it. Ye, I am a plumbing apprentice Ok, lets get on point. I got an aluminum canteen. I think hot water, cleaning agent should be enough to clean it out. Any suggestions for Aluminum canteens? Thanks

Carry booze in your canteen, that'll kill all the germs and give you a boost of confidence when you need it.
