Hello, I recently found out about this theme park, and I thought I would share it with you guys. It is a new theme park in Italy supposedly just opened on June 10th, 2006, based on the movie "U-571." It has awesome effects, and is designed around the U-505, but is represented as the U-571 after the film. I can't explain it as well, and you will have to see for yourselves how cool this looks. www.parksmania.it/english-news_news_movieland--submarine-u-571-video_2096.html

Wow, Nice find spitfire. Looks very cool. The music in the video is from "Das Boot" (when the guy is looking around with the flashlight). How is it based on the U-505 though?

the movie U-571 is about the U-505, just under a different name and a rip off of the British and Polish discovery of the enigma machines. That is what i mean by it being designed around the U-505.

OH, i see what you mean. I know the film recieved a lot of negative attention because of it giving credit to Americans for British accomplishments. And also for the scene where the Germans masacre the crew in the lifeboat. If you accept that it is a fictional story based on real WWII equipment then I think it is a pretty good film.
I think the U-571 is in my backyard.

Spitfire, U 505 and U 571 are totally different stories, please don't make stuff up.
or if you must, add "I think" or "I believe" to your statement. This way you don't look outragously wrong. -Gordak

I didn't say anything false, the movie is about the U-505, but it is called U-571. I don't know if there was a U-571 (I'm sure there was), but there was indeed a U-505 which involved the enigma decoding devices which is what the movie "U-571" is about. And the developers used the U-505 as a referance when building the replica, becuase it is one of the few U-boats that has been preserved. I stand by what I said.

Spitfire, I grew up on the U-505, I have probably been aboard 20+ times since 1979. I personally Interviewed Hans Goebler, (control room cheif for all three cruises, also the man who opened the water locks in attempt to scuttly the ship on June 4th 1944.) I also Crewed U-505 for about 9 hours for an educational film 2 years ago, Yes its the movie you see when you stand in line to see the boat today. I wasn't alowed to post them at the time, but now that the exhibit is public, here are some shots. I was part of that landing crew that took the ship, we were drenched with water, blasted with wind, and told to decend the conning tower as fast as possible, ... we were also told to look scared the whimpy water soaked rusty ladder, that twisted as you moved, was all I needed to nearly piss my pants. I was not acting, I was scared!! anyway I didnt just learn about the boat that day, Ive been learnig about Her for a life time. I also got to go where the public was never allowed... we broght the sub back into service that day, all the plexi glass and saftey boardwalks were removed, we hanged and placed, food and supplies everwhere, slept in the bunks, manned the AA guns, climed in the torpeado tubes. It was basically a U boat fan's wet dream come true. as it was a construction site, we wore hard hats when not acting. it was a huge project, I felt like we were in a Uboat penn. Like I said before, we were not allowed to show people these pictures back then. ready to raid, yes thats an airsoft gun back to my argument The only simularity with U-571 is that the boat was captured (as in the movie). otherwize they have zero relation to eachother. The captian of the Guadacanal wanted to capture a U boot, not get codes or code machines. All the other British special missions were to get code books and enigma machines YEARS before the U505 was captured. See U-110, U- 570, U-559 These stories were much more like the theatrical U-571 this is also why the Brits were pissed about the movie, because it was Americans reenacting their missions. So to review, I was trying to point out that U571 was not based on U 505 here is what you said "the movie U-571 is about the U-505, just under a different name and a rip off of the British and Polish discovery of the enigma machines." I dont mean to be nit picky, but you were answering peoples questions, fermenting the mis-information, and that always bothers me. see now all you needed to do was a google search, but instead Ive gone through great pains to show you my side of the argument. thats becasue I do respect you interest in history, and your feelings, so please, atleast consider what Ive said. Thanks! -Gordak

I'm speechless. I don't know what to say, I just got pwned. I have always been intersted in naval history (especially the Italian naval vessals) I actually had a relation to a man that served on a submarine called "the Scire" that unfortunately got destroyed in the mediterranean. I'm not trying to lead this off topic, I just want to relate to the naval aspect of this discussion . I now see what you were talking about, I was a little confused about what I did wrong at first, but I am sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for sharing this information, I greatly appreciate it.

Dude, you didn't get powned u just learned a bit more about the boats gaining knowlege is not getting powned, its getting better. I was just trying to clarify the thread submarines actually depress me, the stories are always so sad, Next time your in the control room of the 505, remmeber during a depth charge attack, the Captain, convinced he had killed his crew, commited suicide with a pistol. The sub survived and returned captainless to port. My Grandfather, officer on a communications ship in the pacific, never got over how many freindly subs were mistakenly sunk, till the day he died, he would have tears in his eyes whenever the memory came to him. But it's always great to see history preserved! -Gordak

U-571 is a fictional account of a number of German Sub captures all balled up into one movie is it not? Is Jon BonJovi on the U-571 ride in Italy? Great shots of the U-505 movie shoot Sam...remember ...THE ONE YOU DIDN'T INVITE ME TO!!!!I was also lucky enough to sleep on the U-505 back around 1980. I was a Cub Scout and the Museum used to let you spend a night on it. That practice is long gone but I can remember how cold it was inside that damned thing...even in the spring time.

I went to the movie U-571 and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I knew it was a compilation of several incidents and not intended to be a documentary. Why do theaters give you a 55 gallon soda cup for a nickle more? At 58 years old I have trouble sitting through a 2 hour movie on an empty blatter. After sucking on that soda and watching a 2 1/2 hour movie it was virtually impossible. To add insult to injury the depth scharge scenes at the end with continuous bursting pipes damn near killed me.
I managed to get through it but have a new found appreciation for sub mariners. Cool insight Gordak and neat pictures. I'll look for you in the movie which I own and have on my shelf somewhere.

HOLY CARP GORDAK!! What a great story and pictures!! You are soooo lucky to have been part of that. And Capt Zak getting to sleep on the U-505!! What a great memory. I have never been to Chicago but have visited several Subs and sub museums in Europe, including the U-534 (a Type IX like the U-505). That was dredged up from the English channel just a few years back. www.mikekemble.com/ww2/u534.html I was recently at a RC model submarine meet where a fellow modeler mentioned an e-mail he had received concerning an abandoned U-boat model located on the side of the road about 4 hours drive from where I live, He didn't know exactly where it was but I did a lot of research calling police, sheriffs, state patrols etc.. until I located it. It was in fact abandoned and I got permission from the county to remove it and it is now in my back yard. It is a 1/5th scale model of a Type VIIC U-boat and I am fairly certain it is a movie effects miniature from the movie U-571. It is in fairly poor condition, missing the bow, conning tower and deck. It is 40 feet long and around 3 tons!! Was definitely made to go in the water. Has ballast tanks and motors. It cost me $1500 to hire a semi to move it. Not sure what to do with it yet, but it's way too cool to let it rot by the side of the road. Loading on the flatbed. Using the Jeep to move it around my backyard. HOLY CARPx2!!!! Thats AMMAZING!! It looks like it was a really nicely detailed model, I hope you continue to find out more about it. Honestly, is almost one 6th scale, and you know what that means, you could probably make all your money back easy. However it would be a facinating model to restore, the most import thing... atleast it's safe now! -Gordak
