I'm thinking about getting a Tanaka Kar98k to use it as a sniper rifle. However, mounting a scope to it seems tricky since "turret mounts" are expensive and require welding onto the rifle, if im not wrong. So I was checking out LSR (long slide rail?) mounts, but it seems that the Tanaka Kar98k lacks the side-cut of the wood where the LSR is supposed to go. This makes me wonder if it would be possible to fit the mount even after cutting the wood, or if it's simply a no-go to drill screw holes into the rifle? I would be very grateful if anyone knows! I won't be getting the rifle if it isn't possible (and I'm not going to use that horrible scout scope either! ). Regards, ck

If you think a Tanaka k98 won't be effective without a scope then you're sorely mistaken. Big magnification scopes + airsoft =waste. If by the "scout" scope you mean the one that only has 2x magnification (I think) then you're probably better off with that than a higher power scope....nothing wrong with bare irons either.

I have no doubts about it's effectiveness with iron sights, but a Scharfschütze impression would be quite pointless without a sniper scope, don't you think? Problem with the Tanaka ZF41 scope is that I find it's position on the rifle to be very awkward (not to mention it's ugly as hell). So my point is, if I only could have a good mount on the rifle I could slap on a variety of good, but historically incorrect, scopes. With some burlap wrapped around it you wouldn't see the difference anyway...

Why do a scharfschütze impression if you aren't going to do it right. Part of the impression is the correct scope. Putting some modern mount on a Kar98 is lame and doesn't help the impression what so ever. Why not go ahead and sporterize your gun aswell.

The LSR mount isn't modern, it's the same as those used during WW2... As for scopes, there are post-war copies that look pretty much the same in a variety of magnifications. Seriosly, hasn't anyone anything constructive to say?

Yes, Do it right or don't do it at all. Buy a tower mount and JB weld it on like how Gordak did. Also get the correct scope. Its all part of the impression, if you want to do something elite then it costs more.
How is that for constructive?

Well it's better. However I still don't understand why I have to use a tower mount to do a correct impression. LSR mounts where used, mostly by Heer units, when the gunsmith had to deliver the rifle fast. www.thuringenmilitaria.com/pictures/sniperifledkl1.jpgThis is of course all meaningless if it can't be fitted to a Tanaka.

Marushin makes a scopemount for their Kar98 that looks the part and will fit a tTanaka after some modification of the stock and reciver.. And you dont have to use a tower mount to do a correct impression..The demand for sniper rifles with fitted scopes where bigger than the production so pretty much anything goes for historical accuracy.. They even used regular hunting rifles with scopes so a "sporterized" Tanaka would be horrible but still correct..
Check out the book "The German Sniper 1914-1945" by Peter R Senich..Its a lollipops of a book that cover allmost every rifle scope/combo that the germans used..Good stuff

Thank you, it's good to know that I have a couple of options to choose from.
I will check out the book, seems like a great read from what I've seen.

On gunbroker you can get a LSR with a repro Zf39 and sniper safety for i think 499...great deal in my opinion, almost bought it a couple times for my Tanaka, but went with tower mounts instead.

I wouldnt reccomend putting a scope...on an airsoft rifle...as the ammunition you use in an airsoft gun is lighter than live ammo. It will not hit what you see in the scope. Where as the "horrible" scout scope resembles a period scope and doesnt Uber magnify so you have a chance of hitting what ever you see in your sights. So according to your original post, I would not reccomend buying a tanaka. The company made its own scope for one reason...ITS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN WORK FOR THE GUN!

Franz My scope on my K98 and Vsr (Both 550~fps) greatly increases the chance of hitting my target. Nothing past 4x zoom is necessary though, but with it i can fire once, watch the BB all the way to were it lands, then just correct for drop and wind. No matter what FPS or BB weight I use I always have a scope on my VSR, K98, M14, & VFC M82.

Yeah...i use a scope on my L96 and it works great. And it adds to the shooting experience and the overall look of the rifle..And i think the reason for why Tanaka chosed to manufacture the ZF41 simply was that the scope mount is a integrated piece of the rifle, not the Zf41 being the best scope for the rifle..
