So, took me a pair of 12-hour night-shifts... but this is what I came up with.
I was looking for things to carry in my kit as a souvenir, or a picked up item form a fallen enemy. I understand that this is not a 1/1 replica. It is close.
Its missing a proper cap on the bottom. Also, the four bolts on the cap where you screw the can in. A proper paint job is also in order, for the lettering of the written warning on the can. I kind of like the way it turned out with aging on the can, handle and lettering.
without further ado:
Feel free to crit / comment. It's not a 'replica'... but it's getting there.
It's a prototype of another I'm going to make, gonna try for the M43 smoke.
I need to sand the handle but unfortunately only have sandpaper, no tools..
To make it is quite simple.
You need:
Wooden Dowel (From any hardware store, I don't know the measurement of it, so just feel it out.
Two caps from plastic seasoning containers. They are bright orange and are very typically found in grocery stores.
A small can of wood stain. It's the can on top, I think it's a quart?
A screw
A nail (if you dont have a drill.)
Black spraypaint
White paint.
White wood glue.
Hammer
How to build it.
- Cut Dowel to size. I couldn't find an exact measurement online of how LONG the handle is, I cut mine to ~23cm.
- Stain the dowel (used for 'aging') and leave it for about an hour before giving it a good rinse... remember, we're not 'staining'... we're aging. Empty the rest of the stain into a spare jar. We'll use the can later.
- Spray paint the caps and the now empty stain can flat black.
- Glue one of the caps to one end of the dowel. This is the bottom.
- Drill a hole through the remaining cap and the removable lid of the stain can. Make sure both holes are small, we're just looking to make a hole to start the screw in. Make sure both holes are center.
- Screw the lid onto the cap, onto the dowel. Like this:
o -screw
------ - lid
n - cap
[] - dowel
Make sure it's all centered.
- Flip the thing over and hammer the lid into the empty stain can.
- You can ding up the wood a bit to make it look weathered.
- Add "VOR GEBRAUCH SPRENGKAPSEL EINSETZEN" in capitals, all white, to the can.
fin.
