I used the base coat from the pewter kit. See that "stippling" around the safe-fire selector? I didn't get all the alcohol dried before I shot the base coat. The paint immediately "fisheye'd". I almost did something about it, but it looks like old rust that was wire-brushed off years ago, so I left it. A mistake isn't always a mistake. But the topcoat they provide is grey, so I improvised. I sprayed on flat black and brown enamel at random... And used a paper towel soaked in mineral spirits (paint thinner) to wipe it away until I got the effect I wanted. The furniture was done the same way, but without the silver base coat. The front of the springer mag I converted, and the real NOS front grip I got at IMA. Not quite authentic looking on the mag details, but it does work. I think the antique job helps hide this. The winder for the M14 hicap, turned sideways inside. Want to know how to spot the CYMA Tommy from the Maroo? The CYMA uses a Phillips screw in the rear pistol grip bottom, the Marui has the proper slotted type.

Great effect. Looks like it was dragged through hell a few times.

Thanks! Please forgive the 60's era lollipops here, but another one I'm working on: Making up for that: Experiment with dishsoap masking: Base coated in flat black enamel. Slapped Dawn Dish soap across that. Sprayed with silver flake. after it dried, I took a scrub pad to it to remove all loose paint and soap. Then I hit it with clear matte. I covered the stock with masking tape, and drew on the grimace. Peeled this off and stuck it to cardboard. Then I scanned it, and took it into Photoshop, where I ran a "find edges" filter. Printed out two of these, scaled to size. Then I spray-adhesived'd the prints to masking tape that was stuck to some scrap plastic. Then I cut them out with an Exacto, and used them as masks to spray the gun.

You are a frustrated artist seeking an outlet for expression. The aging effects look great. If I might suggest, two completely seprate components like the gun itself and the magazines should be treated differently as it would be rare I suspect for both to show the same patina of age. I think that some contrast between the two would actually enhance the overall effect.
The Warhawk Thompson is clever in a cartoon comic hero sort of way as is the M14 stock and hand guard.

Great suggestions. Yes, I used to paint oodles of car models with my airbrush. In-between shop tasks, I've been painting a few guns. I've been wanting to do the Warhawk job for over a year. It just seemed a natural. Visitors to the shop love it, it's not looking this sharp anymore, and that is a good thing... If you can stand a trip to the 21st century, have a browse here, see some outlandishly-done up guns: www.airsoftretreat.com/forums/index.php?topic=35273.3775I have more M14 stocks than I can count. I've taken to using them as guinea pigs for paint ideas:

I think you might over did it a little on the Thompson for my taste but they all look really cool. But with the M14, Is a paint job like that actually used in Modern day war?? again, great job!!!!

Assorted camouflages have definitely been applied to M14 stocks although nothing as elaborate as shown by Killbuckets examples.

I think you overdone the Thompson a bit.Looks to much like a "warhammer" figurine weapon if you ask me...Really like the M-14 dishsoap pattern..i think i`ll try that myself..!

Killbucket, your work is amazing. That dish soap technique would make an amazing tiger stripe job.

Wow. that aging effect looks great! I may not love the "canvas" but the art on it is great. I'll have to do the same kind of aging to my M16 (not as much as you have though).
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the guide killbucket, i've done it to my MP40 and it looks great, the photo doesn't do it justice, only addition i made was dry brushing some silver on the places that wear more, gives it a 2 tone silver effect.

Looks great! Nice FakeBake with the selector removal, as well. The Bakelite MAY need more patina now. I wonder if anybody has gone as far as actually breaking the plastic, gluing it back up to look like the cracks old Bakelite usually shows?

I'm not to happy with my fakebake job, it was my first go at it, i found this reference photo of a real one upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/MP_40_AYF_3.JPG it has a lot more of a redish look to it, i might try airbrushing a transparent red over the top of it, i've use a tamiya one before that might do the trick.
