I want to build a PTRD-41 or two for use against the German vehicles that are likely to appear with increasing frequency at our skirmishes. The Fausts are fun and work just fine, but the PTRD is the classic Soviet infantryman's AT peashooter and I've always wanted one. My first (and probably best) thought was to doll up a .68-cal Maverick pump paintball marker and use foam Reballs or similar; my second thought was to scratchbuild a CO2 or bolt-action springer with a 1" dia bore that fires homemade "Super Stefan" foam darts.
Has anyone else here ever engineered a foam-firing PTRD or similar for in-game AT? Anybody have any bright ideas on how one might best be constructed?

In discussing potential solutions for a 20mm round, another member of this forum (Top Secret suggested this gun. I don't think it would work so well for that build but an AT rifle... perfect. hk.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0zxX9DOedY

This would be a cool build but I feel bad for the guy who has to lug that around. I saw one at the Westpoint museum firearms display.

For those who Don't know what a PTRD-41 is, this link gives you a good idea: artofwar.ru/img/w/waleckij_o_w/chvk/ptrd-41.jpgLooks like it could be built using a hard copper inner barrel and PVC surround. As Ersatzjack suggests using a gas filled shotgun slug shell might work. There would be no need for any mechanism other than a firing pin. Getting a tight bore and sealed bolt would be the tricky part

I'd suggest 8mm. I think it'd allow more kick when the bb finally gets out of the elongated barrel.

I would agree it would be your best bet. Go with a existing technology instead of re-inventing it. You may be able to still find the "Clear" paintballs instead of marking up the side of the vehicle with colors.

There are "clear" ones , but technically they are not paintballs , they are "Pepperballs" and you don't want to be anywhere near one when they hit or accidentally get crushed.

Considering most vehicle drivers are looking through some kind of slit or screen opening, shooting "pepperballs" at said vehicle could, well . . . create issues.

why not just use paintballs? Because we're not playing paintball.

No it's not Paintball, but we use nerf rockets and they are not Airsoft BB's. The advantage to using paintballs would be that they would leave a temporary mark on the hit vehicle and they are CHEAP!!! I would worry about someone getting hit in the face up close though

Slugshot gas shells are a good idea. In a Maverick-based PTRD, I'd rather use Reballs than paintballs just because I have grown to hate that gooey paintball residue - I remember after the first day of Shatner 1 down at Challenge Park Xtreme, the paint was dripping so thick off the sides of my old ARGO M3L that by morning we left a bright pink rectangular outline on the grass when we moved tank. Troy and I used to swab down our armored vehicles with squeegees between battles, I don't miss that slop AT ALL....

The foam slugs will get about 1/3 then accuracy and range of a paintball.
Nelson once sold clear paintballs for "training without the mess" for law enforcement.
