I hear so much about the DBOYS Kar98 that its a show piece and not skirmishable. Is there anyway to modify or upgrade it to be skirmishable, or just suck less.
Thanks, Ian A.

It doesn't really suck, but the upgrades it can take are a new spring designed for a sniper rifle and a new barrel. The new barrel would require a little modification, as the original has the hop up in a different spot. Other than that, just stock up on shells, and that is about it. With lots of work you could use a .22 barrel and non spherical bullets to get gyro stabilized bullets, but you a. have to find a cheap barrel (harder than it seems) b. make each bullet custom made c. have access to a shop to work on all of this.

Simply not skirmish-able. That's with a capital "ABLE". Buy an MP-40 or make other arrangements. I've seen enough now that I don't feel shy about this stance. Wishing it were otherwise won't make it so. Anyone that feels differently doesn't mind being non-competitive out there. That's not bad if you get something else from the hobby. Me... I like to have a chance.

If you want a kar98k for play then go for a Tanaka. It uses a 10 shot mag instead of the shell ejection system. Very good gas rifle but not cheap.

Thanks guys, I was thinking about getting the Tanaka but it is quite expensive, and im already spending quite a bit on my kit. So i was just wondering if there were any other options. And all in all I sort of like the whole idea of the shell ejection system, it would be quite realistic, but expensive. Do you guys know of if anyone makes a mass production of the shells, like out of plastic?

If want a game rifle then get the Tanaka, unfortunatly the Dboyi is totally out classed in an Airsoft game and you spend too much time looking for the expended shells (which are not cheap either). The Tanaka at least gives you great range and accuracy plus good FPS. As Sir Ersatzjack points out, you stand no chance against a Tommy or VFC BAR or even the Garand. Otherwise get an MP40

Do you guys know of if anyone makes a mass production of the shells, like out of plastic? No one that i know of makes them at the moment, if i could find some plastic rod to use to make sure my idea is valid, then i would make them, possibly even then make a mold, although lathing them would be more precise. You could make them with a lathe easily, but the problem is, you would either have to be extremely precise to just hold the bb, or find a way to install o-rings like the dboys. I actually made some out of wood for the hell of it, as what i had on hand but they break really easy, especially the rim (kind of expected this). The difficult parts are both machining the inside of the lower rim to seal on the bolt, and the outside of the upper shell part, to seal at the barrel interface. For the bottom part, if my Kar doesn't sell, and i get some plastic, i think what you could do would be to machine to about the right amount, then heat the bottom, and jam it on the bolt, to have it mold to the right seal. The reason i suggest this, and skipping the o-rings is becuase not only would they be hard to install, if the oring isn't perfectly symmetrical, it could affect the bb trajectory, as splinters in my wood shells did.

Against my better judgement I will stick in my oar one more time. If you guys would read the appropriate threads you would find that A. I had a new inner barrel installed by Battlesim which was $120 plus which cleared up the accuracy problem and B. Figured out a way to make shells out of old 8x57 real used brass for under a buck (depending on how much you paid for the used brass). The result is a model that looks and functions very much like a real K98 but unless you are playing under a very strict set of fire power rules is for all intenets and purposes non skirmishable. I simply took out a huge buffer space down at the bottom.~CN

If players comply with limited ammo rules and most are required to fire semi automatic the upgraded DBoys rifle like jimseery has will do fine. It certainly won't dominate the battlefield but neither does the Tanaka or any other bolt action rifle.
PS Kalbs (I resent the phrase "or even a Garand") LOL!
