I recently watched U-571 again. The boarding party used a rather interesting M1928 variant. The wood stock was removed and a wire stock, similar to that of the Reising or M1A1 carbine was bolted on to the rear of the receiver.
I'm wondering if anyone has seen a variant like this. Also, does anyone know if soldiers ever put a vertical grip on M1A1s?
Its just a sudden interest I acquired in field-modded M1A1s/M1928s

Never seen the field modded M1928 with a wire stock. Are you sure it just wasn't a folding stock Reising?
I HAVE seen M1A1's with vertical grips added. normally it's a plain // shaped grip that used a longer screw through the original screw hole, not a finely made one like on a M1928 or M1921.

yankeediv, could you be so kind as to dig up a picture for me? I've looked all over google with no results.
in U-571 I'm sure its the M1928. At first I was thrown off and then I realized that the guns had lyman gun sights, ribbed barrels, and most importantly, the Thompson receiver. They also had Cutts compensator.

From the side profile it looks nothing like a Thompson, however I can see how from an angle it does look a lot like a Thompson. Even more so in a movie when the camera is moving around and there isn't a real clear shot of it.

The movie is BS history so why not the movie props too. There were never any issued thompsons with wire stocks.

Was it the M1923 that used the special .45 round?

That Thompson mag vest is interesting though. But with some stuff you never know what the soldiers were doing with the equipment and weapons they had. They rigged them in all sorts of ways.

Moving on, why would you put a bipod on a Submachine gun? The Submachine 'rifle' would not be suited to be a rifle. Did they actually field that model or was it just experimental like you said?

The guy with the rig looks like he made it from a morter carrier or .30 Cal vest possibly

all he did was sew the M2 ammo vest into sections. aint that fantastic, cool, but some of the other "rigger" things ive seen are a lot more interesting.

Actually I bet the thinking behind the Bipods on the early Thompsons was to use them in the Very light Machine Gun role.
Think about it, an M1921 Thompson with a Bipod and using 100rnd Drum mags would make a nice light support weapon actually.

If the soldier's were in tight quarters and there was a building right next door, you could have that Thomson spray a 100 rounds over in that building. If i could have that thompson specialy modded that way, that would be completely badass ;D

so no one can seem to find a M1A1 with a vertical grip? I actually ran my M1A1 stockless at an indoor airsoft place this weekend. I got lots of comments and weird looks.
