There are a number of WW2 Units in the Midwest... I cannot speak for the Chicago area, but check the recruiting forum on this board. We do draw a few members from South Wisconsin/Northern Illinois to our events in Minnesota/Wisconsin.

You may be lucky to find an M1 (out of production) but good luck finding spare mags. I don't think the M1 is a game gun due to the low power, lack of mags and most of all you must cock it every time you fire it. Since this appears to be your first airsoft gun and seeking an allied weapon I think you would be happier with an M1A1 Thompson.

the C96 was used in the boer war 1899-1902, some what in WWI, and very little in WWII by the SS, but in no way standard issue

Actually i have the pistol c96 and its pretty good defintly powerful enough and better range than the colt 45 gbb, correct me if im wrong it is german made.
