Just thinking at this point of a way to make a RS wood stock M1. I've been comparing the mechbox from my AGM MP40. It looks to me like it would fit in the M1 stock with relatively little wood removal. Nothing would extend into the wrist of the stock, like with an M14. The cylinder would be mostly under the upper handguard. The receiver/bolt could be just a shell taken from a cheap springer M14.
I'm still thinking of how to do the magazine. Maybe a reservoir under the bolt with a tube running up to the front. So no more magazine hole underneath. The barrel would be shorter than an M14, but still a decent length.
Anyone think of any major obstacles to doing this? I actually thought of this while looking at the MP40 mechbox as the basis for a Gew43.

Why? While it could work if you put a lot of work into, why over engineer something that is already done much more simply. Not trying to put you down at all, it's an interesting idea, but the m14 based m1 works very well and is fairly straight forward. A reservoir would be a negitive in my opinon as well, magazines are much easier (and cheaper), although it would be cool to not have the magwell. Plus, you would have to buy an mp40, springer m14 (probally plasic reciever and bolt), and a m1 stock, gas tube and hand guards. You would end up spending a lot more then a standerd conversion would. If you are hell bent on this go for it, it would be an interesting take on a Garand, however I just think it's not worth it.

Hey, I just like the feel and look of real wood. And I've already got a spare (real) M1 stock.

It just seems like ALOT of work and money just to have a real wood stock. What about just using an (airsoft) m14 wood stock, I know it's not quite the same but it would be a ton less work and money to get a real wood stock.

Well, that would work, but then you still spend some bucks and end up with a stock with the wrong shape.
Actually, I already started converting my TSD M14 so I'll probably shelve this idea for the time being, or look at it for a Gew43. But I'm so lazy some manufacturer will probably produce both an AEG M1 and Gew43 before I get around to finishing either.

Don't bet on it. I've been saying that for five years now!
