great looking outfit man.....one of the best here..the only problem i had with the mag bags was that they make too much noise.had some 11th abn vets tell me the same thing.....i went to a 3cell pouch instead....

Yeah, I'm kinda liking the look of the 3 cells myself. But according to the experts, it's farb. Is this true? And do the 60-round-mags fit into the 5-cell pouch? Im just not sure.
Thanks a lot granfury!!

All the mags are the same size so if they fit before the 60's will fit.

You can stuff the 60 round (sized like 30 round real steel) into the 20 round (real steel) pouches but they protrude by about a third. You can wrap the snap covers around the magazines and snap them. Because the mags fit extremely snugly they hold well and are quite secure. I actually kinda like the look.

Yeah, I'm not very hot on the mags-sticking-out look... but I might have to get over it, especially if the 3-mag is farb... Is it, 2nd bat?
And are there 20-round-sized mags for the Thompson anywhere?

K, so I remembered that there were 190 round clips that are 20-round sized. Do these things work well and do you have to spin a wheel on them? Thanks!

yes they do have to be wound...and ive seen a good number of pics with the 5 cells being used with the 30 round sized mags.given that ,as far as i remember, the 3 cells were primarily a USMC item....the 5 cells would be the norm or the bag...in fact, somewhere i saw a paratrooper with a couple of 5 cells on his belt and one on each suspender sitting sideways.......that would be a heavy load out....maybe 2nd Batt or Gordak would know...though i dont think alot of guys would have carried 20 round clips when they could jam 30 rounders into the same rig...

Well I would rather have 20's, the 30's were known to fall out.

The notion that the 3 pocket, 30 round,Khaki pouches are not GI (Army) issue is news to me. (I bought some). it seems I'm hearing that they weren't used from several sources so I guess technically it's not a valid load out. OD Grease gun pouches (3 pocket 30 round) did get issued but were more commonly seen in Korea and early Vietnam. Theres a picture of a GI with five pocket OD Thompson pouches on his suspenders with 30 rounders sticking out. in the Battle of the Bulge pictures in this forum West Coast Discussions) Believe me with regards to the magazines they're snug so they aren't going to fall out. You frankly need the large pouch as a dump bag as you're sure not stufing the magazines back in under fire!

spiritedtrooper, yeah I think the 3 cells came out late sometime during the korean war i havent seen one on a ww2 soldier..just purchuse the five cell when you can..that would be right for your Impression..the three cells are cool though and the right shade of khaki...they must of been copies of the korean war pouches..because new stuff in the korean war era was a green canvas and late ww2 early 1945 was green..your pouches are khaki so we awsome they were issued during ww2 but were not..again I never seen them on any old pics or ww2 movies...DRIVE ON TROOPER

Spiritedtrooper...I did some more research on your three cells..I finnally found a referance book called The American Soldier It had your three cell pouch listed and it came out late of 1944 into 45 and was used by the US Army. It would be good for a late war impression..I don`t think the airborne had them for normandy but the riggers made there own pouches for there belts to carry ammo..so why not your Three cells...Its possible..Oh well just hope this helps to clear up the three cell pouches....Take it easy...granfury
