Spiritedtrooper- Fantastic!! Well done lad- you look great and hats off to whoever took the photo's very professional and well done. Only two little eencie-weencie suggestions- ;D 1.) next time your at the surplus store or a boot/shoe store, get leather laces for the Corcorans- 2.) I'm guessing you got the m42 set from ATF and it came with your choice of ABN Div patches and the 48 star flag- (I know mine did) since you chose 101st, the 48 flag is a bit incorrect- very, very few of the Eagles wore them and those that did usually got the tie on brassards- that sew on is correct for the 82nd however. Also, you can lose the clip straps from the Musette bag (1 1/2 inch) that you have going under your epaullets, those are really for when you don't have the bag connected to your m1936 field suspenders and just throw it over a shoulder. It looks like they sent you the large field suspenders too, you can wear the pistol belt a little lower on your waist too if that helps any. but seriously, you look everybit as good as any blank reenactor out there bro! congrats! -G

Thanks guinness! You are a gracious man. Didn't actually get my suit from ATF; it was an ebay auction. Suspenders are a bit long-what do you recommend I do? Will lower the pistol belt and cut the straps on the musette. I'm planning on getting leather straps as soon as possible; they just look so much cooler.
Spitfire- there really ain't a place to get cheap equipment. I got most of mine from Atthefront.com Just kinda gotta save up and lollipops it out, or get some lucky strikes on ebay and such (I got my uniform for 128 bucks). Good luck trooper!
Salute!

Are the wide straps actually sewed on the musette bag? I've never seen that before, just attached with the hook ends to the rings on the bag. I wouldnt cut them if so, I would wrap them up and tie them off incase you needed them later.

Spirited trooper you look terrific and your photo's are great. You greatly exceeded the photo limits set but WTH. I for one am fine with it. GUEST was a bit brutal in his teasing. ENVY is an ugly thing isn't it? The helmet looks great. Flag should be gone or a pin on (common mistake for 101st) I like the fact that you stuffed something in your mussette and bulged out your trouser pockets. (Grenades and K-rats no doubt?)
As for your long suspenders. They are very nice early war Khaki and look great. One of the things you can do (and would have been done by any strack hard charging screaming eagle) is pull the final downward thread of each strap out and instead of weaving it in as you have done, curl the strap over, threading it back into itself. You then double them over (and over and over) creating an inward loop until it's nice and tight. (cinnamon roll effect) You can then secure them with a thin strip of electrical tape or OD cloth tape. (available in WW2) If you can ball them tight enough suprisingly they'll stay on their own. Do that for each dangling strap. Once you're done your look will be clean and airborne.
Your face is nicely subdued In fact during WW2 faces were dulled with wine corks. You just light the end, let them burn and then smear the burnt residue on your face and hands. It'll create a dull black finish. It appears that's what you did. Since you're 101st (one of my old units) I have to tell you how pleased I am.
A nice final touch would be a camo silk scarf cut from a parachute. They sell on Ebay from time to time. Keep it up you do the board proud.

Hello 2nd Bat, and thanks for the compliments. I will take any praise I can get from such a knowledgable person. It's an honor. I will immediately wrap my suspenders like you said; it makes perfect sense. I knew (all too well) about the burned cork, and was scrambling around the local little stores (the day I got my scrim and mag pouch) to get a corked bottle, but I couldn't find one for the life of me. Was too impatient to wait to take pics, so I employed my mother to replicate the effects with whatever makeup she could conjure. Apparantly it worked. Anyway, I still need a canteen, and probably another 3 mag pouch, since standard mags only hold 60 rounds, but that can wait for now. Thanks again for the compliments! Salute!

Great job trooper! Very nice. A few suggestions if I may? To get the "cinnamon roll effect" that 2nd bat was talking about you need to move the buckles on your suspenders further up towards the D-rings where you attach your musette bag to. Most pictures that you see of GI's wearing suspenders the buckles are at least half way, or higher, between the D rings and the pistol belt to accomodate the "roll". When you get more money or whatever you can round out your impression with a proper wool shirt, the brown felt shoulder pads for the suspenders, and I think the 5-cell thompson pouch was more common than the 3 cell for the 101st (correct me if I'm wrong here ppl. I'm not airborne ) Might be better to save up and get the proper 5 cell or thomspon ammo bag than get two wrong 3-cells. Oh ya, and I think you do look kinda like Spiers lol . Guinness, What are the "clip straps from the Musette bag (1 1/2 inch)...under your epaullets" that you mentioned in your previous post? I'm confused on this one. Can you clarify? Thanks

Actually I'm the one that needed to look again What I thought for sure was a musette bag strap is actually the m1936 suspenders themselves! Yikes those are huge on you huh? -G

Aha! Someone finally noticed my sportsmansguide wool shirt. That thing is WAY thick, and very hot. Will acquire a correct one as soon as possible. Was seriously considering whether the 3-pouch was even realistic, and since I couldn't find a vendor for a 5-cell, I folded and bought the 3-pouch. Is it incorrect or just rare? Oh well, I want a 5-cell anyway, just need to find one. Don't know if I like the look of the felt shoulder pads, but after all, spiers wore them.. lol. Were they common enough that I should be compelled to buy some? And where would one acquire such a thing?
S! And thanks for the helpful ideas! (and for the ultimate compliment, go4broke!)

hey trooper instead of buying a 5 cell pouch just get another three and cut one pouch off and connect the two and make a 30 round 5 cell

Easier said than done. He can go to Cap'n zak to get a 5 cell pouch or get a spare ammo bag, instead of spending 50+ dollars on two and end up slaving over trying to work one. You can't just cut and sew them, that is some very thick stuff.
Hope that didn't come out in a mean way.

20 round 5 cells can hold the 30s, they just stick out a bit. or get the mag bag. Anything else is farb. -Gordak

I went with a mag bag and have been very happy with it. I picked mine up used for 20.00 and it was in excellent shape.

Another solution for the excess strap lengths is to route them so they hang inward altough I actually like the cinamon roll twists better. I remember the way you could spot your strack trooper in Vietnam was the gung ho trooper who took the time (even in the field) to roll twist the straps on his butt pack. In hind site strack or anal I'm not sure which.
