M2 60mm Mortar Cut the middle out of an ammo can lid, and welded it back together. Added some angle iron.... Base plate! Base plate, tube, and a car jack... I could make this a lot easier on myself and just build a simple bipod for it, but I really liked the idea of making it elevate like the real one. I thought a screw jack like this would be perfect. Although it won't look spot on,it will function much like the real one once I build a bipod off of it. I still have a TON of work to do, but it's a start. Tomarrow I hope to start on the bipod. Lots of little brackets and such to build. Total cost so far: $0 Plus, I have more then enough parts to build a second one should I like how this one turns out.

The base plate is basicly done. I need to clean up some of the welds and and wire brush the rest of the rust off, but the thing is mostly done. Those little tabs that the bolt runs through will be welded to the base of the mortar tube. There will be a similar joint on the tube where it connects to the bipod. It's going to use m203 rounds. If I can't get enough range out of them, I have a secondary design that will basicly be a co2 powered potato gun. My friend and I built a compressed air one last year and it had amazing range. I just really want to use m203 shells for fast reloading and a more realistic firing. The bipod and base plate are the harder parts, the barrel will be easy to change out if the m203 design doesn't work.

looks great. We used tennis balls in one of ours and got awesome distance.

How did you power your's? I am hoping to use m203 shells but I'm not sure it'll have the power to really launch things as far as I want. My backup plan will more likely be more powerful, but not look and function as cool.

Unrealistic looking dude your's looks much better ours was a chamber and rainbird valve type design.

Unrealistic looking dude your's looks much better ours was a chamber and rainbird valve type design. That's what I'm hoping to avoid. I'm just not sure the m203 shells will have enough pop to launch foam footballs long enough to be effective in a game.. or consistant enough for fallow up shots. If not, I will go with the sprinker valve and chamber design. I built one with a friend last year and it was very impressive... but looked goofy.

The car jack is pretty much set up. I just need to build a handle for cranking it fast. It's rather slow as it's ment for wieght and not speed, I'm not sure how well it's going to work, but it looks kinda cool. Need to add legs to the jack, but I'm done for the day as I pretty much don't have any fingers that don't have a burn or blister on them right now... Next I'm going to work on the firing pin, and the door to remove the shells and that will basicly complete the body of the mortar. Then it'll be building shells for it.

M203 shells have always yielded dismal results when compared to irrigation valves (modded) or piston guns. For best results purchase the madbull CO2 grenades.
However, I would strongly recommend building a piston gun which is compatible with the baseplate and bipod & collar. The results will be x6 the performance of a M203 shell. If you operate high-er pressures above 125 psi, the performance will be x20 that of an M203.

I haven't got a lot done lately. Ran into some issues with making the legs fold... so I gave up. Don't expect much work is going to get done this week as I just burnned the skin off three of my finger tips. Awesome.

I'm wondering what your neighbors must be thinking with a mortar being built on your driveway. lol

Lucky for me our closest neighbor (and the only one in sight) is 3/4 of a mile away. Haven't had much of a chance to do any more work on it, I've been trying to get ready for a trip. Once I get back next week though it's going to be back to work on the mortar.

yeah, I'm lucky to live out in the country, I build mortars, bazookas, and am working on a 105mm, and a few 37mm. I'm not sure how much of that I could get away with in town. haha

I think he meant a 105mm mortar (Correct me if I'm wrong Deac, but I think a 105 mm howitzer sounds a bit ... you know).. like this one:

No, I mean the Howitzer. Its a frickin lollipops . I have some of the frame built, but am not nearly finished. The projectiles will be Nerf rockets, powered by a Piston-gun. I made my mortar, and it shoots consistently 140 yards average, and 150 max.

OK, major update. I reworked it a lot and got a good amount done. Although it's now grown in size quite a bit. It's lobbing tennis balls a good 400 feet or so. I need to work on a new CO2 system for it, but for now we have a mortar.... I have some minor finishing work to do on the body and bipod, and then some paint and I think it will look way less ghetto and actually look pretty good.
