Hello, I was wondering, which units had the NCO stripe on the helmet? I have seen the Rangers, but any others? Thanks!

All of them---or at least the people that were NCO's

Hmm...then why is there such a lack of photos? Weird...also, is it kind of like the shirt issueing, such as, no one really bothered to sew on new patches onto their field shirts, would an NCO bother to paint on a stripe?

It really depended on the operation or opinion. Sometimes you did, and sometimes you didn't have anything. You just trusted him.

photos would suggest it was actually quite rare in the field. The NCO white horizontal bar across the back was fairly commonly done but the chevrons on the front clearly wasn't. If I were on the front lines I'd want as little identifying me as a leader as possible!

S'why most marines removed insignia before combat. The less rank you have, the less will be expected of you, meaning you're not a priority to snipers. Your life might just be saved, unless you are carrying a radio. Blast. And I was on a roll.

in PTO it was almost never done, only few officers (should i say brave or crazy i dont know...) did those if any did at all. in ETO however it was very commonly done, there are plenty of, thousands and thousands of pictures out there with NCO and officerss with horizontal (or vertical for officers) bars on the back. if you dont see it in the picture, that means they are mostly buck privates

I've never seen pictures of the horizontal or verticle white bars in the pacific but lots in European photos. What I've never seen in photos in either theater is the chevron rank on the front of the helmet in WW2. I've seen some Korean war photos with them but not WW2. That's not to say it wasn't done but if so it'd be interesting to know what units and where.
