Not to derail this thread too much, but does anyone know where to get British WW2 identity discs. I have found a few UK dealers, but I need someplace I can trust that will ship to the US.
Further what exactly would I have put on a pair. Name and religion are not an issue. What number and unit information would someone put for something like an infantry unit in North Africa? I know that's vague, but that's the best I can really come up with.

And replied.
get them from Tims Tags, they do the best repros.
The info on British ones is quite minimal, basically army number, religion and name.

Uk ones btw look like this: Theoretically one is fire proof and the other rot proof but i think thats rubbish myself as they are just compressed cardboard stuff. Oh and the UK always refererred to them as 'identity discs' never 'dog tags'.

Oh and in the UK. Your number then was dependant on your regiment or arm of service and was usually seven digits (some 8 digit numbers did exist as did some five digit numbers). Nowadays you get an eight digit number that is based on seniority. For example someonw with the number 24878767 will have been in the army considerably longer than someone with 25781234. However if for example I joined on the 8th of march in Nottingham to be in the Grenadier Guards my number might be 25678912 and a guy joining a day after me in another city to join another regiment, say the Logistics Corp, might well be 25678913.
The only reason i put in this modern trivia is that *weirdly* I joined the 'Staffordshire Regiment' as a soldier in the 1990s... my eight digit number if converted to a 7 digit number by removing the first digit would be in the right 'frame' to be a wwii Staffordshire Regiment number - which is the regiment i mainly re-enact!

Thanks Gadge, one learns something new everyday about WWII. The term "Dog Tag" is strictly American as we were known as "Dog Faces". But I never knew anything about the Brit tags.

At the risk of confusing the issue, I am looking at my father's WW2 Navy dog tag. JAMES RAYMOND SEERY 647-22-21 USNR-O T-5/42 The tag is a stainless steel oval with holes in each end and appears engraved. Certainly not stamped.

Some dog tags were private purchase items as I have even seen gold plated ones. I think yours may be of private purchase type.

I actually think the Navy/Marines had a completely different style of dog tags, with a different shape and layout of the words.

There is a web site that sells an exact replica of my father's tags. WW2 ration technologies. They say it was the USN/USMC type used during WW2.

NAVY, and USMC dog tags were stamped out of steel, then engraved, not stamped letters. They also included the fingerprint of the wearer on the back.
