Of course the shells are designed for practicality, not simulation. I've been on the receiving end of BigEd's mortar at Vietnam games, and while it was accurate, tennis balls weren't practical. When I say they weren't practical, I mean that, unless you saw it fall out of the sky, you didn't know you were just attacked. Easy to lose sight of a fist sized green ball after it lands in a 'village' built in the woods. That large orange head would be much easier to spot.

Something I've seen that helps a great deal is to add a whistle to the projectile. That way you hear it enroute which in addition to being a cool effect helps folks identify that they are being trageted and potentially eliminated. Unfortunately the 2 inch howler NERFs were discontinued.

what would be sweet is to have someone who has a private small airplane or chopper, drop the large vortex howling rockets out over the battlefield. someone with a handheld CB call in the drops. same with supply drops with chutes. Now that would be damn cool.

you can kinda do the same thing with this.. but no airplane, it looks like you can call in shot because there are adjustment knobs.

Or if your talented like me you don't need adjustment knobs. Just a Bipod, and your eyes.

At Liberty Canyon and other games in the NE Big Ed used his homemade howitzers and mortars to fire indirect fire missions based on called in fire requests from units on patrol. He was able to adjust using aiming stakes and kentucky windage and was able to put rounds quite accuratley out to considerable range and well beyond line of site. It was very impressive. This mortar looks like it would be quite cool and at that price seems like a great value for the work involved.
I have tried to find Howler Nerfs and have managed to accumulate about 20 of them but they are quite tough to track down. Better still would be the rounds some guy made on this borad using assorted densities of foam rubber. They looked awesome and with a howler mechanism added would be very cool.
For night missions dipping the rounds in the phlorescent gel from glow sticks is a cool effect and actually is easier to register kills with since their impact is far more blatant and obvious to all the players. It also just plain looks cool

MilSim Labs. I have sampled his pineapple grenades and a couple mortars from last year. The seemed very sturdy and I did like the grenades they had a cap device that was pretty effective when thrown theyd grab your attention when they landed. He has new stuff available. airsoft-news.eu/news.php?item.3898.1

How are milsim labs in general? I really like the look of their grenade and tripwire, but I have not heard of them outside of this thread. Not to be an ass, but their website looks like something from 1999. That does not mean they are bad, but it always makes me all the more cautious. If they are reputable with a good product I may convince a few friends to go in and get a few things.

I've heard nothing but good things from them, and i do web design, and it doens't really matter if it looks like it's from 1999, as long as they get their product out there they should be fine.
@cn, sorry i should googled first. wasn't thinking.

I do some web design as well, it makes me somewhat more critical given I am fully aware what it takes to make a good website. It's not that I would not buy from a place with less than stellar web design, but it always is a sign to check deeper. That, and businesses without some kind of e-storefront means I have to use paypal, which is something I am not particularly fond of. Like I said, I was just trying to see if anyone in the community had ordered from him, it was no inditement of the company. Reading that you and Charley have had positive experiences goes a long way towards me making an order.

don't mean to sound like an idiot, but how does the mortar work? Like, what makes it shoot?
Edit: Nevermind, found it

Whats even harder is getting the nerfs back after an event. I am 3 for 60 in retrieving saboted nerf shots. Even at $2 a nerf it's too expensive, I stick to tennis balls. (Tim and his tennis club are my primary donors. ) Gunfighters (Milsim labs owner) is a member here. The field in Amsterdam, NY is my favorite. If there are no winds and I can see the target. I can zero it in three shots in under one minute. ///ed///

Cool, Recovery of rounds is definitely an issue and it's obvious why Big Ed chooses to fire tennis balls. (Incidently he typically puts three in at a time and they impact and bounce around creating a cool effect.) The field in Wolcott is full of tennis balls especially at the critical tactical areas like the road junction by the village Their are small whistle devices that could be bought and added to darts including the ones used by the M19 mortar.
The M19 is potentially a real game changer and less expensive than many custom guns. I would think it would be a worthwhile investment for event sponsors and teams. It would be cool to have a purpose trained crew that really knew the weapon upside and backward and was well drilled in it's use. 11 Charlies! Hooooooah! I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find the drill commands for a German mortar team and the US procedures are relatively available.

You can adapt anything to do anything but why would you want to? It's not set up to function that way. Looks to me like it would work great just the way it is. And the 40mm grenades are expensive and kind of a hassle.
