Bought a Thompson wood kit for my baby... the brown truck showed up today... Wow, the wood was a horible redish color. Luckly it seemed to be a very thin paint, not a stain. It took me about an hour to sand them bare, however before I sanded them down I beat the hell out of them with a screw driver and put a bunch of scratches and dings in it. By doing the weathering before sanding I found it kept some of the funky paint in the scratches. When I stained it the "damage" really stood out and looks great. Although it looks great, I think I'm going to get a darker stain and go after it again tomorrow. Most of the real Thompsons I've seen have a pretty dark finish.
The fit was pretty good, however it came with some super funky butt plate. I tossed that and modified the original one to work with this stock. Something I'm not really that excited about is how the sling mounts at attached. There are just two small wood screws holding them on. I have a feeling a good jerk on the sling will just rip them out. I am going to epoxy them on plus the screws tomorrow just to make sure they don't go anywhere.

PS I swear the whole house doesn't have pink carpet... just one room upstairs.
