I am not sure if this goes here, but I am posting it anyway. I was wondering how extensively the 1917 was used in WWII? I have found references that it was used, but not how much, and not by who.

Tanaka makes a colt m10 military and police revolver. It was carried by some officers.

The S&W "Victory" and 1917 Colt models were common and used mostly by rear or by aircrews/pilots. The 1917 was used in the field up until 1942 as a secondary field weapon until it was replaced by the M1 Carbine.
Note that George Bush carried one which was returned to him a few years ago by the Submarine crew member who he gave it to when he was rescued. The British Commonwealth troops were also issued in large numbers the S&W .38/200.

some 'old salts' in the Corps carried them also. for whatever reason. one of my impressions is the revolver and the shotgun. early Guadalcanal.

Some Aircrews also had them in Vietnam since they where not as prone to jamming as pistols where in that environment.
