The rank chevrons were for Stabsgefreiter downwards (with the Schutze/ Grenadier not wearing any). As far as I know, all the NCOs from unteroffizier up wore just the tresse on their collar and shoulder boards (with pips for the higher NCOs).

Allright so I have an M36 tunic and use an MP40 so I figured maybe I should go for an NCO impression. I had some questions though...first off, is it okay to wear the NCO insignia. I ask this because from the world of "modern" style airsoft, people get really pissed if you have any sort of insignia/rank/medals. Second is the NCO tress a real pain to sew on to the collar? And third, if you are an NCO, you would not have any rank chevrons would you? Thanks for any and all help. -Rampenfest >> 3 words, Google, Google, GOOGLE! Not to be an ass,but do some research on your own. What you ask is very basic and there is loads of info out there. Also, any special reason you would like to be an NCO? Are you in a unit, starting a unit, etc? As for the tresse, its very difficult to hand sew. I send mine to someone experienced with German uniforms who does it on a machine.

Dead thread but what the hell...For any one else that is looking for SS NCO ideas. Tresse not that hard to sew one. If you look at pictures and you will see Uschas with out tresse. You see this in late war pics. When I was active in the 9th SS in Ca, for blankfire this was my tunic: I used Luft tresse for the collar and army for the boards. I was a common thing, and cocky thing to do. Luft tresse is super bright. I went with a officers flatwire eagle. Yes that is a TK tab....and I was doing the 9th....19th regiment. In our company we had a lot of cadre that was TK. Our Company commander, and 3 of our squad leaders rocked TK tabs. For my cap I went with a m37 with a cloth covered bill. That is a VERY cool hat that you see in a lot of pics....including the cover of Beavers Uniforms if the Waffen SS. For insignia I went with a bevo cap eagle and a metal TK. Original lanyard and whistle Original KVK2, OsTfront ribbon bar. Original Infantry assault in silver. Both tunic and cap are Janke bought back in the day. The best thing to do is look at books Uniforms of the Waffen SS and Cammoflague Uniforms of the Waffen SS are GREAT tools and packed with good pictures. Wenn alle Bruder schweigen is also a GREAT book for tons of photos that are you will never seen any were else. The Divisional Histories are also good but hard to find. I have the Hohenstaufen book. They have them for every "famous" division.
