First go over the surface of the thing you want to make look like wood with some sand paper to rough it up. Then wash all the dust off and dry it. After that spray paint it with a coat of darker tan. When its dry go over it with sand paper to make some grain lines but don't take the paint off completely. Finally get some gel stain(darker colors seem to work better) and apply it on with a paint brush. This process usually works good for me.

I use a combination of a rasp and rough sandpaper which creates alternative grains. I paint in the main color desired and then apply a black acrylic overwash with a cloth wiping the black down and in until achieving the desired results.
In addition to filling in the "grains" the over wash can be adjusted quite easily unti, you achieve the shade for the stock that you want.
Once done and dry overspray with a clear acrylic lacquer. I use dull coat from hobby shops. Naturally if you want your stock shiney use a satin or gloss for that pretty hunters rifle look.
This overspray will protect the finish and further the illusion of wood. Nothing of course beats wood but the effects acheved can be pretty good.
