The guide is pretty good, but one thing he doesn't mention, and you wouldn't notice if you follow his directions, is that the M14 barrel is about 2 inches shorter than the M1. When I cut off my stock, I measured against an actual M1 stock. When I went to put the pieces together my barrel didn't extend to the end of the gas tube. I've got the pieces sitting here while I ponder whether the shorten the stock, lengthen the barrel or shorten the foregrip. I'll probably shorten the stock. It's not like the thing isn't long enough as it is.

He shortened the stock and the handguard. However for realism's sake I would just extend the barrel. I can notice when a handguard is too short.

I had the same dilemma, but since I had the right tools, I chose to lengthen the outer barrel. Too me it was risky to cut the front hand guard and all associated metal and have it all go back on right. With lengthen the outer barrel, it’s all hidden inside the rear hand guard.

Why not just make a longer barrel? copper plumbing tubing.

That would work although the only problem would be you don't have threads for the gas cylinder lock. If your using a screw to keep the gas cylinder in place that isn't a problem though.

Why not just make a longer barrel? copper plumbing tubing. Well, that's what I was thinking of doing. Cut the barrel in half and insert a length of copper. But I felt kind of queasy about cutting the barrel, so last night I trimmed the stock back.
