I've only seen it in very very late war photos, and mostly on very young soldiers. I think its a cool looking jacket but you would only get very limited use of it at reenactments.

Not very! It was issued to the GD Division and a select few others for trials in the summer of 1943. It was not adopted till Oct. of 1944,and with the German supply system being what it was then,issue was sporadic. All branches were to wear this tunic except panzer or assault gun crews. Even the Kriegsmarine.
So,in a nutshell,it wasn't very common at all,and a somewhat rare item till the very late stages of the War.

Hi guys,
M44 Tunics;
The M44 was the final design change of the standard service coat issued to the Heer and Waffen SS. This tunic entered field trials in the Spring and Summer of 1944. Mass production began later that summer. Although intended to be made from a new olive brown colored wool, in practice, these were made from about every shade of field gray as well.

If you were to get one of these tunics, you would only be able to use it for Battle of the Bulge and later events.
