Hi! My question: Did the 101st Pathfinders paint the unit marks onto the helmets' sides? (Spade, Heart etc.) Or just painted the ranks, and so on... I've got the American Paratrooper Helmets book, and it doesn't say anithing about it. I know that the 101st used camo paint on their helmets (Black, or Green colors). And I have the D-day Paratroopers book too, what is pointed that: the 101st use Camo suit too, but the helmet question didn't answered. The Paratrooper Helmets book says that too some of the 101st used camuflage suit on d-day, but they were very few. They brought from the 82nd members. Please let me know!
Thank you!

Also,as far as I can tell from all the books I have, the 101st did NOT paint their helmets.the 82nd did so in Sicily I believe. As for the camo uniforms. Men spray painted green, brown or black on their uniforms, but no camo uniforms were issued to any paratroopers.

In the Paratrooper Helmets book, there is a picture from a Helmet, which is painted black, and it's got the original green paint too. It's stamped as a 101st helmet.
I'm writing down what the book says:
...There were also several Glider outfits within the airborne ranks of the 82nd Division, who had their helmets camouflage painted. Yet, relatively few paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Divsion and the 507th, and 508th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division used camouflage painting techniques. It seems that those who did camouflage paint their helmets were generally associated with units that fought in the MTO or were at some point under the leadership of Bill Yarborough (Who invented the whole camouflage painting method in the airborne) Most helmets worn in Southern France in August 1944, by the First Airborne Task Force were camouflage painted, using large pneumatic spray guns; whereas the units on all other fronts simpoly used a hand-applied paint brush technique...
Another sentences from the book - about the 101st Camouflaged Helmet:
...An M-2 parachutist helmet belonging to Pfc. Fritz Muller (ASN 13177388), 'I' Company, 501st PIR, 101st Airborne Division. The helmet was camouflaged with black paint. Black camouflage has been found on several helmets attributed to 101st airborne troopers. (The helmet is in the D-day Paratrooper Historical Center collection, Normandy)...
(Michel DE TREZ - AMERICAN PARATROOPER HELMETS - Mediterranean and European Theater of Operations)
So I don't agree with that There wasn't any camouflaged helmet in the 101st. The truth is that, we don't know what the Pathfinders wear at the same time. So, did they paint the party icons on the helmet's sides?
