I know there are probably millions of threads on an M1 carbine, but i love that gun. I was thinking what if someone made a custom gear box that everything in a normal M14 gearbox would be smaller? would it work?

come up with a custom gearbox that will fit first. Otherwise, this will be another dead topic.

right now the only viable option would be a upgraded aep gearbox like an mp7

I had seen a guy put the gearbox in the handguard. and Im working off that idea. the plan i have is that there is some type of barrel going past the gearbox and into the hopup. But now how will the bbs go through that barrel? the barrel extends to the back of the stock, just a little past the magazine. And in that part of it there is a spring, a small piece of plastic or metal, and a piece built in along with the bolt, cocking lever, whatever you want to call it, that is moved down the BB barrel by the spring. Now it will push the bbs into the hop up unit allowing u to actually fire. and once you finish off the ammo in the mag, and you go to reload. You would have to pull the bolt back, pulling back that metal piece, pulling back the spring. and there is a small push in, push out, lock. Needs some work, i think it could be done. what do you think about it? P.S. I will try to get the drawings up, i just dont know how to get them into a computer haha.

I don't know exactly what you have in mind but from what I've just read I can pnly say this: it won't work. Do you have any experiences with stuff like this ?

So why ask if it's possible if it's already been done ?

I think you would get better responses if you actually made it first, then posted it here. If you notice, a lot of us are skeptics. And for good reason. Yes the japanese scratchbuild was good. But the gearbox has been severely modified. Others have built it using AEP gearboxes that sacrificed power. But more than anything, there have been tons of people who put up threads about building one or asking advise about building one, or saying how it would be possible but never followed through. I suggest doing a lot of research, decide if you are going to build it based on your research, then ACTUALLY try to build it, THEN post a thread. Otherwise, this will be another exercise in futility. I'm not dissing on you or anyone. Believe me, i'd be more than excited if you can pull it off. Anyways, good luck.

It's a slow Sunday afternoon. Let's beat the carbine issue some more. My latest off the wall thought. Making an M1A1 from an AK47. Strip all the exterior stuff off the AK, including cutting down the trunnion block where the sight mounts, so the top is level with the receiver. Just barrel and reiver with internals.
Make a slightly oversized M1 stock that this would fit in. No buttstock, because this is the M1A1. The stock would have to extend a little bit further to the rear than the actual M1 stock, to accomodate the AK receiver.
The M1A1 pistol grip is short, fat and more vertical than the M1A1. Build up the AK grip so it looks like the M1A1. It's going to be larger, but so's the rest of the gun.
Make an upper hanguard to fit and a shell m1 "receiver" to over the mechbox. Fabricate a metal folding stock. Maybe use MP7 mags inside a shell that looks like an M1 carbine mag.
If I wasn't so lazy I might try it. It wouldn't be perfect, but it might pass the twenty foot test.
